International Details - Sentinel Scores Its Best Weekend on International Charts

September 17, 2006

The Sentinel climbed into 6th place on the international charts, the best placing the film has earned. It had a few openings, the biggeset being a sixth place, $410,000 debut on 89 screens in South Korea over the weekend, and $469,000 in total. On the other hand, the film place first in Belgium with $197,000 on 36 screens over the weekend and $226,000 in total and third in Denmark with $102,000 on 32 screens over the weekend and $108,000 in total. Overall it earned $3.44 million on 1423 screens in 22 markets for a total of $31.96 million, which puts it about a week from topping its domestic total.

  • Alatriste showed the same kind of legs most movies have in Spain down 44% to $3.32 million on 450 screens for a total of $11.87 million. Its weekend total was more than double its nearest competitor in its native market and enough to place it in seventh place overall.
  • Click was just a rounding error behind in eighth place with $3.21 million on 1164 screens in 36 markets for a total of $40.40 million. The film had a few openings of note this weekend including a first place, $325,000 debut on 55 screens in Thailand. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second in both Sweden, ($332,000 on 56), and Hong Kong, ($276,000 on 28). The film still have several major openings left, including Germany, U.K., Spain, Italy, and Japan, all by the end of the month.
  • You, Me & Dupree earned a third first place finish in the U.K. with $1.39 million on 410 screens and now has $10.92 million in that market alone. Overall the film added $3.11 million on 1154 screens in 16 markets for a total of $26.16 million allowing it to remain in ninth place.
  • Snakes on a Plane continues to underperform internationally adding $2.94 million on 2040 screens in 27 markets for a total of $19.07 million. The film opened in fifth place in Mexico with $414,000 on 300 screens and just sixth in Germany with $310,000 on 279 screens. I really expected more from that latter market.
  • Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties fell out of the top ten with $2.85 million on 3200 screens in 28 markets for an international total of $95.13 million. The film had no real openings this weekend, but did manage $164,000 on 60 screens in previews in Australia.
  • Superman Returns opened with $526,000 in Greece and remained strong in Italy with $1.23 million on 558 for a total of $5.33 million in that market. But that wasn't enough as the film lost more than half its weekend total to $2.46 million on 2034 screens in 26 markets for a total of $184.72 million internationally.
  • United 93 relied on holdovers as it climbed to 13th place with $2.41 million on 2201 screens in 46 markets for a total of $37.19 million internationally.
  • Little Man remained strong in the U.K. with a second place, $1.25 million weekend on 314 screens raising its total there to $4.28 million. This helped the film climb a spot to 14th with $2.41 million on 782 screens for an international total of $15.85 million.
  • Lady in the Water opened in several more markets but still fell to 15th place with $2.36 million on 1644 screens in 32 markets for a total of $18.79 million. The film did well in its two English market debuts with a second place, $437,000 debut on 232 screens in Australia and $69,000 on 44 screens in New Zealand for a third place opening. However, it showed weakness in Holland opening in fourth place with $110,000 on 41 screens and bombed in Poland with just $42,000 on 40 earning just a ninth place finish there.
  • Sinking Of Japan slipped sixteenth with $1.87 million on 594 screens in 4 markets for a total of $49.77 million. The film is still in the top ten in Japan with $557,000 on 294 screens for a total of $43.52 million after two months of releases there.
  • As expected, Gwoemul, a.k.a. The Host, plummeted in Japan down 51% to $303,000 on 215 screens for a total of just $1.48 million in that markets. On the other hand, it was in fourth place over the weekend with $836,000 on 168 screens for an estimated total of $79 million. Adding in smaller markets and the movie made $1.79 million on 529 screens in 4 markets for a total of $81.08 million.
  • My Super Ex-Girlfriend slipped a couple spots to 18th with $1.75 million on 903 screens in 22 markets for a total of $19.08 million internationally. The film opened in Argentina over the weekend but bombed with just $44,000 on 20 screens, which was barely enough for eighth place. On the other hand, it held up reasonably well in Russia down 40% to $564,000 on 250 screens for a two-week total of $2.12 million.
  • Between Love and Hate opened in first place in South Korea with $1.62 million on 253 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total.
  • John Tucker Must Die returned to the internationally charts in 20th place with $1.51 million on 700 screens in 9 markets for an early total of $8.69 million. This was thanks mostly due to the film's first place, $796,000 opening on 177 screens in Australia while is struggled in Mexico with $199,000 on 154 for a eighth place finish.
  • The Ant Bully returned to the charts thanks in part to its sixth place, $647,000 opening on 262 screens in Spain. Overall the film made $1.51 million on 1107 screens in 22 markets for a very disappointing total of $14.33 million.
  • Little Miss Sunshine opened in semi-limited release in both the U.K. and France earning very strong openings given the film's screen counts. In the former it opened in fifth place with $652,000 on 114 screens, (including nearly $200,000 on just 19 screens in London), while it also placed fifth in France with $583,000 from 72 screens and was first in Paris with $400,000 on 25. Including holdovers, (Switzerland), the film made $1.31 million on 201 screens in 3 markets for a very early total of $1.38 million.
  • While Gedo senki, a.k.a. Tales From Earthsea was knocked out of first place in Japan bust still remained strogn with $1.30 million on 315 screens for a total of $60.44 million after seven weeks of release.
  • Je Vais Bien, Ne T'En Fais Pas opened in first place in France with $1.27 million on 215 screens over the weekend, which was enough for 24th place overall.
  • Three Fellas opened in second place in South Korea with $1.26 million on 245 screens over the weekend and $1.57 million in total.
  • The Lake House fell nearly 40% and 8 places to 26th with $1.36 million on 983 screens in 41 markets for a total of $51.38 million internationally. Its only opening of note was in Hong Kong where it earned third place with $184,000 on 17 screens.
  • Volver landed in 27th place with $1.23 million on 391 screens in 16 markets for a total of $53.86 million. Its biggest market remains the U.K. where it climbed a spot to eighth with $448,000 on 87 screens for a three-week total of $3.25 million.
  • Pulse made its first appearance on the international charts with $1.14 million on 691 screens in 8 markets for a very early international total of $3.15 million. The film managed fourth place in Italy with $483,000 on 219 screens while bombing in the U.K. with just $392,000 on 279 screens. On the other hand, the film hit $2.00 million in Russia, including $57,000 on 60 screens this weekend.
  • Lage Raho Munnabhai didn't collapse like other Indian films have in their second week of release, but the $1.11 million on 598 screens in 15 markets is a bit of a disappointment compared to other, similar recent releases, as is its running tally of $4.78 million.
  • Udon just managed 30th place on the international charts and the Japanese film added $1.05 million on 24 screens to its total of $7.23 million so far.
  • The Break-Up added an estimated $1 million on 1100 screens in 35 markets to its international total of $72 million.
  • Le Maître d'armes, a.k.a. Le Master d'armes, opened in sixth place in France with $602,000 on 97 screens, which bodes reasonably well for its opening here this week.
  • DOA: Dead or Alive started its international run living up to its title, at least the DOA part. Its best market was Australia but the film could only manage fourth place with $396,000 on 139 screens while in neighboring New Zealand it finished one place lower with $45,000 on 20. On the other hand, it could do no better than ninth in Italy with a tiny $98,000 on 100 screens.
