Award Season - First There's the Globes, then Comes the Gold

The Golden Globes were handed out last week, but the real winners were rewarded this weekend as the Golden Globe Bounce was in full effect.

A couple films, The Queen and Last King of Scotland, had the best weekends of the run so far. As did Letters from Iwo Jima, but it had a massive theatre count increase and a 64% drop-off at its per theatre average so one could conclude that its theatre count growth was the principle reasons for the box office growth and not its Golden Globe win.

Babel also saw triple-digit growth earning its best weekend in two months while seeing both its theatre count and per theatre average increase. There's no doubt that the Golden Globes were responsible for that. The Departed and Borat also saw increases, but of a smaller nature up 18.5% and 17.4% respectively.

Ironically, the big winner of the night, Dreamgirls, didn't see any growth over the weekend. The same can be said for The Painted Veil and Happy Feet while The Devil Wears Prada and Cars are no longer in theatres.
