International Details - Pirates Ship Starts to Sink

July 8, 2007

Some very interesting news on the international front this weekend regarding Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. First of all, it fell out of the top five; however, it was still able to pull in more than $10 million over the weekend. Not too long ago it was a chore to find a dozen films that cracked $1 million, while this past weekend we had 6 that earned $10 million or more. Over the weekend the film added $14.02 million on 5775 screens in 104 markets for a total of $608.89 million internationally. It is the sixth film to cross $600 million internationally and is now in fifth place on that chart. Worldwide the film has $906.89 million making it the ninth highest grosser of all time. The U.K. is still the film's best market at $78.51 million compared to second pace Japan where it has made $74.02 million. However, that gap continues to narrow with the film making $3.23 million on 691 screens in the latter and $1.37 million on 401 screens in the former.

  • Ratatouille started its international run in seventh place with $5.83 million on 1398 screens in 9 markets. This includes a first place, $3.52 million opening on 450 screens in Russia, easily the biggest opening for a Pixar film there. The film opens in Mexico this weekend but doesn't finish its run until October.
  • Hostel: Part II climbed back into the top ten with $2.30 million on 1179 screens in 17 markets for an early international total of $8.28 million. The film was aided by a fifth place, $1.37 million opening on 263 screens in the U.K., which is significantly off the pace of the original and the $2.12 million it made during its opening weekend.
  • Persepolis opened in third place in its native France with $1.90 million on 199 screens, earning it ninth place overall.
  • Apne was the first of two films from India to chart this week, but it appears the competition hurt the ticket sales of both films. Apne placed tenth with $1.88 million on 623 screens in 16 markets, which is still a fair to good result.
  • Up next was the second Indian film to chart this week, Aap Kaa Surroor, which pulled in $1.55 million on 517 screens in 15 markets. Like Apne, this film's debut was encouraging, but not amazing.
  • 28 Weeks Later returned to the charts with $1.45 million on 388 screens in 3 markets for a total of $22.15 million. The film opened in Spain over the weekend and was able to earn second place with $1.41 million on 313 screens, which is actually more than the original made in U.S. dollars back in 2003. However, it is important to note that inflation and a falling U.S. dollar is a big factor here.
  • Black House fell to second place in its native South Korea and 13th place internationally with $1.45 million on 295 screens over the weekend and $6.38 million in total.
  • Maiko Haaaan!!! fell to fourth place in Japan and 14th place internationally with $1.45 million on 287 screens for a total of $9.44 million after three weeks of release.
  • Blades of Glory eased 38% in Australia to $1.26 million on 188 screens for a two-week total of $3.72 million. Overall the film added $1.29 million on 309 screens for a total of $22.04 million. This is much lower than the film earned stateside, but better than most Will Ferrell films do overseas.
  • Zodiac was the final film to top $1 million over the weekend with $1.29 million on 1377 screens in 38 markets for a total of $44.29 million.
Moving on to the latest box office updates...
