International Details - Transformers Remains Hair-raising

July 29, 2007

The Transformers held on strong dipping just 7% to $33.77 million on 4626 screens in 41 markets for a total of $192.44 million. This includes an estimated $6.4 million from previews in the U.K. The film's only major opening of the weekend was Mexico where it placed first with $5.46 million on 410 screens pushing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into second place. The Transformers also continued its amazing run in South Korea adding $3.12 million on 442 screens for a running tally of $46.21 million, which is like making $500 million here given the relative sizes of the two markets.

  • Live Free or Die Hard showed some growth this weekend climbing 31% to $23.58 million on 5506 screens in 60 markets for a total of $156.03 million so far. $200 million internationally is practically assured at this point, while the $265 million Die Hard with a Vengeance earned is not out of reach and depends almost entirely on how well the film will do in the few remaining major markets it has yet to open in. Its best opening of the weekend came in South Korea where it took in $5.87 million on 531 screens from Friday to Saturday and $11.31 million in total.
  • No major openings for Shrek the Third left it down 34% to $11.94 million on 4764 screens in 40 markets for a total of $382.89 million after more than 2 months in the marketplace. The film only has a couple major markets left to open in, and a handful of smaller markets, so there's little hope it will catch up to Shrek 2 's total, but it has already made enough to justify two more sequels, at least the studio thinks so.
  • The first new release to chart was Hairspray, which managed fifth place with $4.24 million on 367 screens, $4.20 million of which came on 348 screens in the U.K. This is a good start, but it is way too soon to say with any certainty where the film will end up after its run is over.
  • Ratatouille remained in sixth place adding $3.85 million on 1767 screens in 14 markets for a total of $37.50 million. The film had no major openings, again, but it did cross $10 million in Mexico after three weeks with a total of $10.49 million including $1.35 million on 667 screens this past weekend. To put that into perspective, Cars made $12.62 million in total there while The Incredibles made $15.76 million. If Ratatouille can fit somewhere in-between, it should walk away with $500 million worldwide.
  • As expected, Pokemon 2007 fell sharply in Japan, however, a 50% drop-off to $3.21 million on 351 screens was not as bad as it could have been while its total of $13.87 million is still a strong result.
  • Partner opened in eighth place with $3.16 million on 613 screens in 17 markets. This includes a fifth place opening in the U.K. with $487,000 on 43 screens, which was more than twice as much as Firehouse Dog opened with despite that film playing on 203 screens.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is just wrapping up its run adding $2.87 million on 2914 screens in 32 markets for a total of $640.62 million internationally and $946.65 million in total. Internationally, the film is fourth place overall and fifth worldwide. As for the film's best individual market, the film added $1.08 million on 591 screens in Japan for a total of $85.28 million after two months of release.
  • Ocean's Thirteen managed to grab the last spot in the top ten with $2.81 million on 2261 screens in 47 markets for a total of $157.08 million internationally. Worldwide the film will end up with $300 million, give or take, which is lower than the rest of the films in the franchise, but still enough to show a healthy profit.
  • Next returned to the charts in 11th place with $2.66 million on 616 screens in 13 markets for a total of $28.33 million. The majority of that came from the film's $1.80 million, second place opening on 327 screens in Spain, which could top the U.K. and its $4.92 million as the film's best single market before long.
  • Monkey Magic fell to third place in Japan and 12th place overall with $2.61 million on 460 screens for a total of $10.84 million. This was not as strong of a hold as I was expecting.
  • Grindhouse was in lucky number 13th place with $1.97 million. Roughly 90% of that coming from Death Proof with $1.77 million on 738 screens in 21 markets for a total of $14.98 million while Planet Terror added $200,000 this weekend for a $1.31 million total.
  • Knocked Up placed 14th with $1.79 million on 289 screens in 3 markets for a total of $9.36 million so far. The film opened in third place in New Zealand with $293,000 on 46 screens, which is more than twice as much as The 40-Year Old Virgin opened with back in 2005 and nearly half as much as it finished with. Almost all of the rest came from Australia where the film has made $9.21 million, including $1.48 million on 283 screens this past weekend.
  • Invisible Target opened in second place in Hong Kong with $589,000 on 36 screens over the weekend while adding in other markets in the area gave the film 15th place overall with $1.69 million on 575 screens over the weekend and $2.07 million in total.
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer fell hard this week down 57% to $1.41 million on 1669 screens in 20 markets for a total of $107.94 million. No new openings was the culprit this weekend, but that will change when it opens in South Korea next weekend.
  • The Thia film, Faet, (a.k.a. Alone), returned to the charts with $1.23 million on 172 screens over the weekend and $4.74 million in total. Almost all of that came from South Korea where the film debuted in fourth place with $1.20 million on 143 screens over the weekend and $2.29 million in total.
  • Pathfinder also returned to the charts with $1.21 million on 277 screens in 2 markets for a total of $14.79 million. All but a rounding error of that came from the film's third place debut on 274 screens in Spain.
Moving onto the few updates....
