International Details - Superbad Neither Super Nor Bad

Superbad climbed into sixth place with $4.26 million on 1836 screens in 27 markets for a total of $31.79 million. Most of that growth came from Spain where the film debuted in second place with $2.24 million on 350 screens while it also opened in Brazil with $511,000 on 192 screens. The film doesn't have many major markets left to open in, but it has already earned more than most comparable films do during their entire run.

  • Michael Clayton also saw serious growth over the weekend reaching seventh place with $3.74 million on 960 screens in 11 markets for a still early total of $12.55 million. This includes second place openings in both France, ($1.88 million on 301 screens), and Australia, ($642,000 on 122 screens). Meanwhile, the film flopped in Mexico earning just $175,000 on 146 screens.
  • Going By The Book managed first place during its opening in South Korea and eighth overall with $3.31 million on 403 screens over the weekend and $3.84 million in total.
  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa held on better than most Indian films down just 32% to $3.12 million on 743 screens in 17 markets for a total of $10.97 million. It is already a major hit for this type of film and if strong holds continues it will become of the biggest Bollywood hits of the year.
  • The Heartbreak Kid nearly fell out of the top ten with $3.06 million on 1038 screens in 9 markets for a still early total of $18.64 million. The film had no major openings but did do well in two midlevel markets: Holland, ($294,000 on 63 screens over the weekend and $356,000 in total), and Belgium, ($245,000 on 35 screens over the weekend and $272,000 in total). The film is performing better internationally that it did domestically, but that's not saying a whole lot and overall the film has still performed disappointingly.
  • Shadows in the Palace had to settle for second place in South Korea, but it was close are is earned $3.03 million on 405 screens over the weekend and $3.77 million in total.
  • The Kingdom had one of the worst drop-off this week down 48% to $2.90 million on 1347 screens in 21 markets for a total of $15.82 million. However, the film had no major openings this weekend and that was a mitigating factor.
  • I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is cruising on holdovers at the moment, but it still added $2.68 million on 1440 screens in 35 markets for a total of $57.74 million. This includes $1.32 million on 494 screens during its fourth weekend in Germany for a total of $10.58 million.
  • The Seeker: The Dark is Rising nearly doubled its screen count this weekend but its box office haul slipped by 6% to $2.66 million on 1799 screens in 16 markets for a total of $6.66 million. The film opened in Mexico but only managed second place in the family friendly market with $781,000 on 350 screens while it bombed in Britain with $438,000 on 379 screens earning seventh place in the process. However, arguably the film's best market of the weekend was Spain where it added $750,000 on 290 screens for a total of $2.57 million after two weeks.
  • Knocked Up opened in third place in Italy with $937,000 on 255 screens. This is not a huge amount, but it was enough to lift the film into 15th place with $2.53 million on 1160 screens in 29 markets for a total of $61.42 million. The film has very few markets left to open in, but it has already earned more than enough to be considered a box office smash hit.
  • Hairspray opened in second place in Japan $1.05 million on 225 screens; this was the best of the three wide releases in that market, but still below the $5000 per screen average that usually separates the winners from the losers in that market. Overall the film added $2.44 million on 1132 screens in 24 markets for a total of $68.30 million.
  • The Bourne Ultimatum fell further this weekend landing in 17th place with $2.32 million on 1518 screens in 37 markets for a total of $182.91 million. It still has openings in Japan and Italy to go and is still aiming to earn more internationally than previous two installments earned combined.
  • The Invasion opened in Japan, Germany, and France, but bombed in all of them. Japan was its best new market where it placed third with $501,000 on 217 screens, but that's a terrible start for that market. It placed seventh in France with $693,000 on 241 screens while it missed the top ten in Germany with $233,000 on 198. Overall the film added $2.31 million on 1369 screens in 13 markets for a total of $13.59 million.
  • The Brave One had the worst week-to-week drop-off on the charts this week down 50% to $2.27 million on 1922 screens in 41 markets for a total of $24.58 million. It is rapidly running out of markets to open in and has little hope of salvaging its box office run.
  • Death At A Funeral is the little film that could remaining in the top 20 while adding $1.99 million on 539 screens in 13 markets to its total of $12.82 million. The film climbed into first place in Australia with $1.06 million on 146 screens for a two-week total of $2.80 million while it remained in seventh place in Spain with $424, 000 on 127 screens for a total of $1.07 million.
  • Brothers opened in first place in its native Hong Kong with $704,000 on 35 screens while it made $1.84 million on 285 screens overall.
  • Un Secret fell to third place in France but still added $1.79 million on 444 screens for a total of $8.38 million.
  • SMS: Sotto Mentite Spoglie was down just 18% during its second weekend of release in Italy but it was still knocked into second place with $1.66 million on 299 screens over the weekend and $4.50 million in total.
  • Earth earned $1.61 million on 509 screens in 3 markets for a total of $4.17 million.
  • El Greco, which means The Greco, opened in first place in Greece with $1.52 million on 104 screens. That was more than five times its nearest competition and almost as much as such hits like Shrek the Third earned in total in that market.
  • Hero has become a long-term resident of first place in Japan where it adde $1.18 million on 475 screens to its total of $64.80 million. However, it had to settle for third place in Hong Kong with $286,000 on 27 screens.
  • Tropa De Elite repeated as box office champion in Brazil with $1.44 million on 252 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.27 million after two.
  • Laaga Chunari Mein Daag nearly fell out of the top 30 with $1.34 million on 471 screens in 16 markets for a total of $6.35 million.
  • Surf's Up has earned more internationally than it did domestically as its take overseas hit $59.11 million, including $1.32 million on 1554 screens in 31 markets this past weekend. The film still has openings in a couple major markets, but a high price tag will prevent it from showing a profit anytime soon.
  • The Game Plan grabbed the final spot in the top 30 with $1.29 million on 400 screens for a total of $3.83 million, all of which has come from Mexico so far.
Rendition started its international run this past weekend but missed the top 30 with $1.24 million on 349 screens in 2 markets, almost all of which came from the U.K. where it placed third. Meanwhile, Meet the Robinsons returned to the international box office after a hiatus, but it crashed in France with just $962,000 on 295 screens while it was little better in Belgium with $174,000 on 64 screens. Overall it made $1.21 million on 554 screens in 7 markets for a total of $58.14 million.
