Like on the sales chart, Live Free or Die Hard led the way in rentals with $12.42 million during its first week of release, which makes it one of the best renting new releases of the year. Hairspray placed second with a very strong $9.60 million in rentals, just ahead of Shrek the Third sophomore stint of $9.10 million. Ocean's Thirteen landed in fourth place with $6.51 million for the week and $14.40 million in total. Rescue Dawn debuted in fifth place with $6.43 million, which is more than it made theatrically.

There were only two other new releases to chart with The Santa Clause 3 - The Escape Clause placing ninth with $4.73 million in rentals. Finally, the direct-to-DVD release, Stir of Echoes 2: The Homecoming, placed 29th with $1.43 million in opening week rentals.
