DVD Rentals - Superbad is Super but Pirates were not Bad

December 17, 2007

Like it was on the sales chart, new releases took the top two spots on the DVD rental chart. However, they finished in the opposite order as Superbad beat out Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End $13.97 million to $9.54 million. Superbad's performance here compared to its performance on the sales chart may be explained either as a clear case of Try-Before-You-Buy, or it may be a lot of people interested in seeing it are expecting to get it for Christmas. Live Free or Die Hard was pushed into third place with a still-powerful $8.39 million for the week and $31.07 million in total. The Nanny Diaries opened in fourth place with $7.10 million, which was much better than it did on the sales chart. Rounding out the top five was Waitress, which dipped just over 17% to $5.63 million for the week and $12.43 million in total.

The only other new release to chart was 24 - The Complete Sixth Season, which landed in 19th place with $2.27 million.
