International Details - Juno Jumps Up the Charts

Thanks to an opening in the U.K., Juno shoot up the charts nearly reaching the top five with $8.28 million on 1111 screens in 15 markets for a still early total $17.15 million. In the U.K. the film placed second with $3.91 million on 363 screens, but had the best per screen average in the top 10 there. It also opened in France scoring sixth place with $1.22 million on 149 screens, which gave it the second best per screen average in the top ten there. Meanwhile in Spain the film grew by 5% to $1.03 million on 170 screens over the weekend and a total of $2.34 million after two.

  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is moving in the other direction falling from third to seventh. Over the weekend it added $7.52 million on 2049 screens in 24 markets for a total of $58.25 million, which places it ahead of its domestic total. It did open in Mexico, but struggled with just $789,000 on 285 screens, while it should do better this weekend in Spain.
  • Kung Fu Dunk opened in eighth place with $6.93 million on 809 screens in 5 markets over the weekend and has pulled in $10.92 million in total. Much of this came from China, but box office numbers were not released.
  • L: Change the World opened in Japan easily taking first place with $5.30 million on 288 screens. Adding in smaller markets and the film made $6.25 million on 553 screens in 4 markets over the weekend and $6.31 million in tota.
  • Charlie Wilson's War climbed into tenth place with $5.90 million on 1562 screens in 32 markets for a total of $26.25 million. This would have been good news, except the film debuted in a trio of major markets struggling in each. In Italy it placed sixth with $1.06 million on 247 screens while in Germany it placed seventh with $1.39 million on 349 screens. Finally, in South Korea it landed in eighth place with $612,000 on 164 screens over the weekend and $1.03 million in total.
  • Rambo just missed the top ten, again, with $5.50 million on 1485 screens in 21 markets for an early total of $16.96 million. The film placed third in its debut in France with $2.71 million on 453 screens, while it fell 60% during its second weekend in Spain with $974,000 on 345 screens over the weekend and $3.98 million in total.
  • No Country For Old Men just missed first place in Spain with $2.36 million on 307 screens while it had a more subdued opening in Mexico coming in seventh with $252,000 on 134 screens. Overall it earned $5.26 million on 1326 screens in 16 market s for a total of $24.36 million.
  • P.S. I Love You made $4.98 million on 3216 screens in 19 markets for a total of $56.39 million. This includes $1.00 million on 212 screens during its opening in France.
  • The Bucket List fell from 7th to 14th with $4.55 million on 3291 screens in 18 markets for a total of $20.32 million. The film was hurt by a lack of major openings, but that will change as it opened in the U.K. on the 15th.
  • American Gangster fell from fifth to 15th place with $4.50 million on 1834 screens in 37 markets for a total of $123.79 million. This film crossed $250 million worldwide and will top its domestic total shortly.
  • Saw IV returned to the charts thanks to a first place opening in Germany where it pulled in $3.18 million on 362 screens. Overall it placed 16th with $4.19 million on 562 screens in 9 markets lifting its total of $61.67 million, which is nearly what it earned stateside.
  • Alvin And The Chipmunks slipped to 17th place with $4.08 million on 2890 screens in 25 markets for a total of $119.81 million.
  • The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep was one of a handful of film to return to the charts this week. It was able to do so thanks to its opening in the U.K., however, it was not as strong there as expected and the film only managed fifth place with $1.48 million on 415 screens. Overall the film managed just $3.54 million on 1522 screens in 24 markets for a total of just $16.11 million.
  • Earth bounced back onto the charts landing in 19th place with $3.53 million on 470 screens in 4 markets for a total of $35.96 million. Most of the weekend total came from Germany where the film opened in fifth place with $2.17 million on just 147 screens giving the film the best per screen average in the top ten there. The film has done very well as a theatrical release in several market, while the DVD has sold more than 3 million units here for sales of more than $170 million.
  • 30 Days Of Night opened in third place in Spain with $1.92 million on 300 screens and fourth place in Italy with $1.32 million on 203 screens. Overall the film managed 20th place with $3.49 million on 607 screens in 10 markets for a total of $31.24 million.
  • Once Upon A Time In Corea grew by 70% in South Korea earning $3.37 million on 334 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.02 million. This was enough for the film to climb to first in its native market and 21st overall.
  • Just behind it was fellow South Korean film, Lovers Of 6 Years, which earned $3.15 million on 320 screens over the weekend and $5.20 million in total.
  • The Game slipped to third place in South Korea but still earned an impressive $3.09 million on 318 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.76 million so far.
  • Continuing the parade of South Korean films, Women's Team Handball landed in fourth place in its native market and 24th overall with $3.06 million on 313 screens over the weekend for a total of $25.38 million after a month of release.
  • Enchanted crossed $300 million worldwide thanks in part to its second place, $2.07 million debut on 44 screens in Hong Kong (including previews). Overall the film placed 25th with $2.94 million on 1361 screens in 31 markets for a total of $176.06 million internationally and $301.83 million.
  • Keinohrhasen fell ten spots to 26th place, despite dipping just 9% overall to $2.74 million on 723 screens in 3 markets for a total of $48.90 million. Of that total, $44,33 million has come from Germany, including $2.54 million on 636 screens this past weekend.
  • Quiet Chaos opened in first place in Italy with $2.46 million on 384 screens, which was enough for 27th place overall.
  • Glorious Film Batista missed first place in Japan by a serious margin, but still earned 28th place on the international charts with $2.45 million on 284 screens during its opening.
  • Into The Wild has now earned more internationally than it has domestically $19.96 million to $18.10 million. This includes $2.32 million on 662 screens in 10 market this weekend, while it has yet to open in Mexico, Japan, and some smaller markets.
  • Atonement landed in 30th place with $2.28 million on 964 screens in 35 markets for a total of $63.27 million. The film did open in Mexico this past weekend, but it struggled earning 10th place with $168,000 on 66 screens.
Two romantic films made their international debuts, but missed the top 30 in the process. Fool's Gold managed $1.95 million on 254 screens in 3 markets, $1.76 million on which came from the film's first place opening in Australia. Meanwhile, Definitely, Maybe opened in the U.K. in sixth place with $1.35 million on 332 screens.
