Per Theater Averages - Akbar and U2 Too

Jodhaa Akbar opened on top of the per theater averages chart with an estimated $1.3 million opening 100 theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was U2 3D with an average of $10,198 during its fourth week of release.

Diary of the Dead opened with an average of $5,538 in 42 theaters, which is probably not enough to convince many theater owners to add the film later on, at least not enough to help the film get a wide release. The Year My Parents Went on Vacation was a little weaker with an average of $4,481 in 18 theaters. 2007 Academy Award Nominated Short Films opened with just shy of $200,000 in 65 theaters for an average of $3,041; this is not a lot, but it is an improvement over previous years. The concert film, La Traviata at La Scala opened with $20,000 in 7 theaters for an average of $2,851. Finally, Vexville opened with $3,227 which would be a mediocre opening average, but it made this little in 97 theaters for an average of just $33. That works out to roughly two tickets sold per theater per day. This is dangerously close to Zyzzyx Rd. territory.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Jodhaa Akbar hit $1 million, and it did it during its first weekend.
  • In Bruges also made it to $1 million, but due to the nature of Jodhaa Akbar, this film has a better shot at expansion.
  • The Kite Runner reached $15 million over the weekend, and while that's as far as it will go, the distributor should be very, very happy over this result.
  • There Will Be Blood hit $30 million and how much father it goes depends heavily on how many Oscars it can win on Sunday.
  • The unstoppable Juno has earned more than $125 million, including Monday, which makes it the highest grossing limited release since My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The film has now made more money than Superbad and is just behind Enchanted and will enter the top 20 for 2007 very, very shortly.
