International Details - Goodbye to the Top Five

April 27, 2008

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, a.k.a. Welcome to the Sticks, remained in first place in France with $4.79 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $175.67 million after 8. However, it fell out of the top five internationally with $5.33 million on 963 screens in 4 markets for a total of $187.13 million. In its native market, the film has ticket sales of 19.25 million putting it about three weeks away from topping Titanic's record of 20.64 million while it is closing in on $200 million internationally. Both of those are amazing records, and the film is hardly showing signs of slowing down.

  • Detective Conan: Full Score Of Fear followed in its predecessors' footsteps leading the way in Japan with $4.05 million on 335 screens over the weekend.
  • Nim's Island had no major openings this week but it did hold well down just 14% to $3.92 million on 1165 screens in 10 markets for a total of $11.53 million. In Australia it grew by 17% to $929,000 on 196 screens for a total of $3.47 million after three weeks, which is about what it made here taking into account the relative size of the two markets.
  • Fool's Gold opened in second place in the U.K. with $1.94 million on 398 screens, which was more than half of the film's international box office this past weekend. It also helped it climb into the top ten internationally with $3.54 million on 1064 screens in 32 markets for a total of $19.78 million. Next week it opens in Germany, Italy, and Spain while it debuts in France the week after that. If it can't have number one openings in all of those markets, just matching its disappointing domestic total will be out of reach.
  • The Forbidden Kingdom made its debut on the international charts in 10th place with $3.26 million on 399 screens in 5 markets. These openings came in Southeast Asia, and include a first place debut in Singapore with $1.11 million on 55 screens.
  • Disco fell out of the top ten with $3.25 million on 830 screens in 3 markets for a total of $20.50 million. This includes $3.14 million on 794 screens in France where the film has a total of $19.70 million so far.
  • Superhero Movie shot up to 12th place with $2.89 million on 748 screens in 12 markets over the weekend for a total of $8.90 million after four. The film was aided by a number of midlevel markets, including Thailand where it placed second $223,000 on 54 screens, and Norway where it also landed in second place with $145,000 on 24.
  • Taken grew by 5% in South Korea earning $2.09 million on 287 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.02 million. It also opened in Belgium but was less successful earning fourth place with $133,000 on 27 screens over the weekend for a total of $142,000. Overall it managed 13th place with $2.65 million on 547 screens in 4 markets for a total of $15.95 million.
  • Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon added $2.45 million on 923 screens in 6 markets for a total of $20.26 million, which is more than it cost to make. We are still waiting for the film to expand outside its region, which will determine how large or a profit it can make.
  • Crayon Shinchan 16 opened in second place in Japan and 15th overall with $2.43 million on 317 screens over the weekend.
  • Sommer opened in first place in Germany with $2.11 million on 407 screens while it placed 16th internationally with $2.41 million on 511 screens in 3 markets.
  • Shutter fell to 17th place with $2.18 million on 948 screens in 14 markets for a total of just $10.14 million. It was hurt by the lack of major openings, while it was helped by a mere 19% drop-off during its second weekend in Mexico. There it added $615,000 on 320 screens for a total of $1.88 million.
  • The Game Plan fell more than 30% to $2.16 million on 1293 screens in 14 markets for a total of $50.64 million.
  • Never Back Down returned to the charts in 19th place with $2.01 million on 895 screens in 6 markets for a total of $9.54 million so far. It struggled in Spain landing in fifth place with $848,000 on 202 screens while it bombed in France missing the top ten with just $522,000 on 103 screens.
  • Sans Arme, Ni Haine, Ni Violence, a heist film from France struggled in its native market opening in fifth place. However, the $1.89 million on 285 screens it made was enough for 20th place internationally.
  • Foregtting Sarah Marshall opened in two markets, Australia and Iceland. The film opened in first place in both markets earning $1.71 million on 255 screens in the former and $31,000 on 5 screens in the latter. The film opened in the U.K. this weekend, while it continues its graduated release schedule right till September.
  • The Ruins made its debut on the international charts in 23rd place with $1.54 million on 553 screens in 9 markets for an early total of $1.79 million. Among its openings this week were a pair of major markets: Russia and Spain. In Russia the film opened in fifth place with $587,000 on 205 screens while in Spain it only managed ninth with $460,000 on 200.
  • Jumper fell nearly 50% to $1.47 million on 1344 screens in 15 markets over the weekend for a total of $137.85 million.
  • Passe-Passe only managed sixth place in France with $1.44 million on 278 screens. However, with its two smaller markets it managed 25th place internationally with $1.47 million on 294 screens.
  • Krazzy 4 landed in 26th place this week with $1.44 million on 697 screens in 15 markets for a total of $5.46 million, which is not enough to be considered a real hit.
  • The Kite Runner nearly fell off the charts adding $1.40 million on 739 screens in 23 markets for a total of $53.88 million. It did top $10 million during the past week in Italy and now has $11.15 million, including $896,000 on 333 screens last weekend.
  • Vantage Point added $1.38 million on 1074 screens in 47 markets for a total of $75.25 million. It could reach $150 million worldwide, but will fall off the charts before then.
  • In Bruges reached the top 30 for the first time with $1.32 million on 290 screens in 2 markets for a total of $6.03 million. Almost all of that came from the U.K. where it expanded wide for the first time taking in $1.27 million on 270 screens for a total of $5.61 million after more than a month of release.
  • The Other Boleyn Girl rounded out the top 30 with $1.30 million on 695 screens in 21 markets for a total of $35.11 million.
One final note, His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass fell out of the top 30 a while ago, but it was reported that it crossed $300 million sometime during the week. Compared to its production budget, $300 million isn't great, but compared to its domestic run, it is phenomenal. Usually the only time a film earns more than 80% of its worldwide box office on the international scene is when it is an international movie.
