International Details - No Foolin'

May 4, 2008

Fool's Gold opened in a trio of major markets and that helped the film climb into sixth place with $4.93 million on 1809 screens in 39 markets for a total of $26.30 million. The film did relatively well in Spain with $1.03 million on 272 screens and in Germany with $934,000 on 254 screens while earning second place in both markets. On the other hand, it bombed in Italy with just $516,000 on 232 screens landing in sixth place. Overall, it was better than the film's average so far, but not nearly enough to recover from its previous troubles. It should hit $100 million worldwide this weekend, but that's not much compared to its domestic run, nor compared to its production budget.

  • The Spiderwick Chronicles fell out of the top five pulling in $4.17 million on 2877 screens in 45 markets for totals of $80.84 million internationally and $151.72 million worldwide. This will be the last milestone it reaches, especially given the film's reception in Japan. That market is usually a lucrative one for fantasy films, but it only managed sixth place $944,000 on 354 screens.
  • Ca$h opened in first place in France with $3.41 million on 522 screens while it managed eighth place internationally with $3.57 million on 549 screens in 3 markets.
  • Step Up 2 The Streets saw it screen and market counts shrink this week as it added $3.15 million on 1450 screens in 16 markets for a total of $81.72 million. The film has precious few markets left to open in, but it is already a fantastic financial success.
  • Meet The Spartans returned to the charts in 10th place with $2.83 million on 718 screens in 11 markets for a total of $42.57 million. The majority of the film's weekend total came from Italy where it opened in first place with $1.74 million on 286 screens over the weekend and $2.02 million in total.
  • Detective Conan: Full Score Of Fear remained in first place in Japan with $2.68 million on 335 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.14 million after two.
  • South Korea is not a market known for long legs, but for the second weekend in a row, Taken grew at the box office there. This week it was up 7% to $2.22 million on 277 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.32 million after three. Overall it made $2.54 million on 428 screens in 4 markets for a total of $19.83 million.
  • Tashan opened with $2.46 million on 344 screens in 15 markets, which is below expectations and below average compared to recent Indian films.
  • For the first time in its run, Welcome to the Sticks saw a serious drop-off falling 54% to $2.44 million on 941 screens in 4 markets for a total of $192.06 million. In France it made $2.16 million on 849 screens for a total of $177.24 million from 19.56 million tickets sold. However, for the first time in a month, I'm not sure if it will sell enough tickets to top Titanic's record of 20.64 million. If it doesn't recover from this weekend's drop-off, then it won't get there. And it could accelerate its decline if it starts shedding screens, which is entirely likely as Iron Man opened there this weekend.
  • Nim's Island fell to 15th place with $2.22 million on 1124 screens in 12 markets for a still early total of $15.37 million.
  • Superhero Movie earned $2.14 million over the weekend on 703 screens in 14 markets for a total of $12.85 million. The film has opened in very few major markets, so it is hard to figure out where it will end its run, and we won't really have a more solid idea till mid-June or so.
  • 10,000 B.C. returned to the charts in 17th place with $2.13 million on 1472 screens in 44 markets for a total of $165.37 million. This includes a third place, $1.52 million opening on 465 screens in Japan, which is its final market.
  • The Eye also returned to the charts placing 18th with $2.00 million on 852 screens in 22 markets for a total of $19.78 million. The film opened in second place in the U.K. but only managed a mediocre $1.40 million on 370 screens.
  • Deception made its international debut in 19th place with $1.97 million on 606 screens in 3 markets. The film opened in a trio of major markets earning $888,000 on 204 screens in Russia, $576,000 on 111 screens in Australia, and $508,000 on 291 screens in the U.K. In each market it was able to perform relatively better than it did domestically, but that's hardly high praise and one could call these early results mediocre, at best.
  • There were 10 films to return or enter the charts this past weekend, 27 Dresses was one of them. This weekend in placed 20th with $1.87 million on 581 screens in 9 markets for a total of $74.23 million internationally and $150.94 million worldwide. It made its return mostly thanks to its third place, $1.24 million opening on 230 screens in France, while it has yet to open in China and Japan. At this point the studio must be happy with the film's box office numbers, so it matters little how well it will do in those final two markets. This is good, since it is unlikely to do too much business in those two markets.
  • Shaolin Girl opened in second place in Japan and 21st place overall with $1.84 million on 312 screens over the weekend.
  • Untraceable added $1.67 million on 1218 screens in 24 markets for a running tally of $19.71 million. The film opened in Australia, but only managed eighth place with $480,000 on 122 screens.
  • Crayon Shinchan 16 added $1.47 million on 317 screens in Japan giving it a two-week total of $4.28 million.
  • Sommer held firm in first place in Germany with $1.15 million on 407 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.60 million after two. Adding in the two smaller markets it is playing in and it made $1.33 million on 511 screens in three markets for a total of $4.21 million.
  • [Rec] opened in France over the past weekend scoring fourth place with $1.24 million on 170 screens. Overall it earned 25th place with $1.30 million on 222 screens in 4 markets for a total of $16.02 million.
  • The Other Boleyn Girl opened in fifth place in Italy with $560,000 on 102 screens over the weekend earning $629,000 in total. This is neither particularly high nor low compared to the film's other international openings. Overall it has made $36.93 million, including $1.27 million on 703 screens in 20 markets over the past weekend.
  • Shutter had no openings this past weekend, and it nearly fell off the charts as a result. It did bring in $1.20 million on 871 screens in 14 markets for a total of $12.16 million. This film is about halfway done its international run, and about halfway to matching its domestic box office total.
  • Sand Chronicles only managed fifth place in Japan with $1.18 million on 244 screens, but that was still enough to make it on the top 30 this past weekend.
  • Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon saw its weekend haul sliced in half to $1.15 million on 576 screens in 7 markets for a total of $22.14 million.
  • Disco collapsed falling 65% and 19 spots to 30th place with $1.14 million on 741 screens in 3 markets for a total of $22.44 million. Of that, $21.22 million has come from France, including $1.08 million on 706 screens this past weekend.
Two other films made their international debuts over the weekend but didn't reach the top thirty. Smart People struggled in Australia barely making the top ten with $353,000 on 132 screens. Meanwhile, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay opened in second place in Singapore with $187,000 on 10 screens.
