International Details - Forbidden Falls from the Top

The release of Iron Man hit The Forbidden Kingdom knocking it into second place with $9.63 million on 2062 screens in 11 markets for a total of $40.51 million. The film had no major openings, but it did make $1.10 million on 398 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total of $5.63 million.

  • Opening in nearly 20 markets was Made of Honour, note the international spelling, which landed in third place with $6.41 million on 1329 screens in 18 markets. The film had nearly identical results in the U.K. and Australia earning $1.48 million and $1.46 million respectively. It also did well in Mexico where it opened with $1.17 million on 350 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.61 million since its midweek opening.
  • Partners: The Movie opened with $5.61 million on 300 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.99 million including midweek numbers. This was enough for first in Japan and fourth internationally.
  • 21 slipped to fifth place with $4.08 million on 2594 screens in 31 markets for a total of $37.70 million. Its next major opening comes in Australia next week.
  • Fool's Gold opened France but bombed with $280,000 on 135 screens over the weekend landing in 12th place in the process. Overall it made $4.07 million on 1822 screens in 44 markets for a total of $32.91 million.
  • No major openings left Foregtting Sarah Marshall falling from second to seventh with $3.89 million on 980 screens in 10 markets for a total of $16.17 million. It held well in the U.K. down 38% to $2.61 million on 391 screens for a total of $8.62 million after two weeks. It has made $5.11 million in three weeks in Australia, including $667,000 on 248 screens this past weekend.
  • Horton Hears A Who is shedding screens and markets earning $3.67 million on 3238 screens in 20 markets for a total of $131.96 million. This includes a fifth place opening in South Korea where it made $997,000 on 439 screens over the weekend and $1.30 million in total, but this was a disappointing total. The film has yet to open in Japan, but it will have to perform much better there if it hopes to match its domestic total.
  • Nim's Island climbed into the top ten with $3.29 million on 1445 screens in 13 markets for a total of $20.58 million. Growth was possible thanks to a fourth place opening in the U.K. with $1.61 million on 393 screens while it was less prosperous in Russia with $408,000 on 256 screens.
  • Detective Conan: Full Score Of Fear grew by 20% in Japan to $3.22 million on 335 screens over the weekend. This was enough for second place in the market and 10th place internationally, while it lifted its running tally to $14.55 million to far.
  • Street Kings fell out of the top ten with $2.68 million on 1880 screens in 36 markets for a total of $25.41 million. It has now made more internationally than domestically, with openings in France, Italy and other markets still to come.
  • Deux Jours A Tuer opened in second place in France with $2.19 million on 396 screens while in total it made $2.27 million on 403 screens in 2 markets landing in 12th place.
  • Shaolin Girl climbed into 13th place international with $2.21 million on 312 screens in Japan, given it third place over the weekend and $6.78 million in total.
  • Ca$h was pushed into third place in France with $1.94 million on 523 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.03 million while it managed 14th place internationally with $2.14 million on 550 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.51 million.
  • Like many Japanese films on this week's list, Crayon Shinchan 16 saw box office growth. It was able to rise 27% and climb to 15th with $1.87 million on 317 screens over the weekend while its running tally is now $7.50 million.
  • Welcome to the Sticks landed in 16th place with $1.82 million on 891 screens in 4 markets for a total of $195.99 million internationally. Of that, $1.41 million came from 800 screens in France giving it a total of $179.30 million from 19.75 million in ticket sales. The opening of Iron Man did not cause the film to collapse, however, it is still tracking to finish below Titanic's record of 20.64 million tickets sold.
  • Taken had the best hold in the top ten in South Korea adding $1.22 million on 364 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.48 million after a month in the market. Overall it made $1.75 million on 483 screens in 4 markets for a total of $22.89 million.
  • Alexander: Nevsky Battle opened in second place in Russia with $1.53 million on 408 screens while it placed 18th internationally with $1.72 million on 463 screens.
  • While most local films saw growth in Japan this past weekend, 10,000 B.C. slipped 6% to $1.43 million on 465 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.34 million. Overall it made $1.63 million on 678 screens in 26 market for a total of $170.00 million.
  • Beastie Boys opened in second place in South Korea and 20th overall with $1.60 million on 277 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.69 million.
  • Step Up 2 The Streets fell from 9th to 21st with $1.53 million on 1043 screens in 18 market for a total of $85.17 million.
  • Saw IV returned to the charts in 22nd place thanks to its debut in Italy. There it placed second with $1.49 million on 317 screens while overall the film has $70.06 million in total.
  • Tashan fell 43% to $1.41 million on 321 screens in 15 markets for a total of $5.95 million. It is safe to say this Indian film bombed both here and abroad.
  • The Spiderwick Chronicles had the worst week-to-week performance on the charts this week down 67% and 17 places. However, the film held very well in Japan gaining 18% to $1.11 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.51 million in total. Over the weekend the film added $1.38 million on 1647 screens in 36 markets for a total of $84.44 million. With a production budget of roughly $90 million, it is hard to say if the studio is happy with its run to say, however, it is safe to say it has not broke even, but could if it does well on the home market.
  • Sommer was down just 5% in its native Germany adding $1.08 million on 407 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.96 million after three. Overall it made $1.30 million on 511 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.16 million.
  • 27 Dresses added $1.30 million on 457 screens in 11 markets for a total of $76.36 million, which is almost exactly what it made domestically.
  • 15 Ans Et Demi opened in fifth place in France and 27th overall with $1.28 million on 343 screens.
  • Le Grand Alibi opened in sixth place in France and 28th overall with $1.22 million on 262 screens.
  • Sand Chronicles slipped a spot both in Japan (to sixth place) and internationally (to 29th place) with $1.20 million on 244 screens for a two-week total of $4.28 million.
  • Superhero Movie nearly fell out of the top 30 with $1.17 million on 611 screens in 15 markets for a total of $15.00 million so far. The film has yet to open in a number of major markets, but so far has not demonstrated much strength internationally.
  • Just missing the top 30 was The Game Plan with $1.06 million on 1117 screens in 12 markets for a total of $53.47 million. The film will end its run with $150 million worldwide, more or less, which is a fantastic run for this type of movie.
  • The only other film to pull in more than $1 million was [Rec], which made $1.04 million on 237 screens in 4 markets for a total of $17.39 million.
