KHAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN!

Sorry, wrong Khan. Mongol, which is a movie about Genghis Khan, opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $27,065 in five theaters, which gives it plenty of room to grow. The overall number one film, Kung Fu Panda, placed second with $14,642. Next up was the second place film on the overall box office charts, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, which made an average of $11,130 in each of its nearly 3500 theaters. The final film to cross the $10,000 mark was The Grocer's Son with $10,587 in its lone theater.

None of the other new releases came close to the $10,000 mark this week with The Promotion earning $5,082 on the per theater charts. It is likely that this will not be enough to convince many theater owners to book this film as it tries to expand, meaning we are still looking for our first indie sleeper hit of the summer. When Did You Last See Your Father? was right behind with an average of $4,901. Further back was Mother of Tears with $2,774, but at least it topped the Mendoza Line. Polar Opposites and Solar Flare had nearly identical openings with $1,628 and $1,554 respectively in the same lone theater. On the Rumba River struggled with $1,156 in one theater while Miss Conception earned $1,342 in three for an average of just $447.

It appears that Young @ Heart was the only film to reach a major milestone this week as it hit $3 million over the weekend.
