DVD Sales - A Fool and His Gold

July 1, 2008

Fool's Gold led a quartet of new releases on the DVD sales chart this week, selling 595,000 units for opening week revenue of $10.65 million. Second place went to fellow new release, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, which earned $7.19 million from 416,000 units. The Bucket List fell to third place with a still respectable 371,000 units sold for the week and totals of 1.47 million units and $24.33 million. Jumper lifted its total sales above the 1 million unit mark with 305,000 for the week and 1.23 million in total while its sales revenue climbed to $23.89 million. Rounding out the top five was National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which sold 159,000 units, generating $2.53 million in revenue for the week and giving it totals of 5.42 million units and $86.38 million.

Just missing the top five was The Sword and the Stone, which placed sixth with 134,000 units and $2.98 million in sales. Two more new releases landed in the top ten with Be Kind Rewind placing ninth with 98,000 units / $1.76 million and The Jungle Book 2 placing tenth with 86,000 units / $1.90 million. The final new release to chart was Under the Same Moon, as that film earned 16th place with just under 50,000 units and $945,000 in sales.

Moving onto the High Definition end of things, Blu-ray fell 33% this week to $8.5 million in sales. However, DVD sales fell 23%, so this decline was partially due to the overall weakness, and Blu-ray is a lot more susceptible to fluctuations at the top because it doesn't have a major catalogue and must rely on first run releases to generate sales. Additionally, the number one seller for the week was Jumper, which beat out Fool's Gold. When a holdover tops a new release, you know overall sales are in trouble. If the numbers are still this soft when Batman Begins comes out on Blu-ray, then there might be reason for concern.
