Per Theater Averages Fall after Summer

September 3, 2008

Not a single film reached the $10,000 per theater average mark this weekend. In fact, only Sukiyaki Western Django came close with $9,856 in one theater over the three-day weekend.

The best of the rest of the new releases was Another Gay Sequel, which made just over $21,000 in three theaters for an average of $7,029. Close behind was I Served the King of England with an average of $6,652 in eight theaters while My Mexican Shivah also did relatively well with $6,100 in one theater. On the other hand, Goal 2 made a reported $150,000 in 99 theaters for an average of $1,515, which is likely no more than it cost to make and ship each print to the theaters. Antarctica performed even worse, earning just $798 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Elegy has likely peaked at the box office. However, it still made it to $1 million early in the weekend, and it is more than halfway to $2 million.
  • Hamlet 2's expansion did not go as smoothly as the studio had planned, but it still reached $1 million on Thursday while reaching $2 million over the weekend (and $3 million including Monday).
  • As expected, Bottle Shock dipped a little at the box office. However, it still made it to $2 million before the weekend and $3 million during the weekend.
  • Tell No One reached $4 million during the weekend, and it is not done yet.
  • Fly Me to the Moon is holding on a lot better than expected and topped $5 million over the weekend. $10 million is not out of the question (although its midweek numbers will collapse now that school is back).
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona reached $10 million early this past weekend and it is already more than halfway to $15 million.
