DVD Sales - New Releases Flood Sales Chart

September 3, 2008

New releases dominated this week's sales chart in a way that is rarely seen. Not only did we have a new number one, but there wasn't a single holdover in the top eight. That new number one was Camp Rock, which sold 535,000 units and generated $8.02 million in revenue. Next up was Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which sold 414,000 units. However, with a higher average price it was actually the number one seller in terms of raw dollars with $9.16 million. Street Kings placed third with 280,000 units sold for sales of $5.63 million while The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior landed in fourth place with 250,000 units / $4.39 million. House, M.D. - Season Four opened in fifth place with 174,000 units sold, but thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it generated the third highest revenue for the week at $5.74 million. Prom Night just missed the top five with 151,000 units sold for opening week sales of $2.73 million. Two more TV on DVD releases rounded out the top eight onslaught with Dexter - Season Two selling 144,000 copies for $3.61 million, while Gossip Girl - The Complete First Season sold 96,000 units for $3.71 million.

There were two other new releases that were not part of this flood at the top. This included Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles - The Complete First Season, which just missed the top ten while selling 74,000 units and generating $1.57 million in spending. Finally, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day opened in 19th place with 39,000 units / $772,000.

Blu-ray sales saw double-digit growth, up 14% to $7.1 million, which was 5.5% of the total home market sales. However, while it gained in total sales, the Top 20 comparison saw its ratio drop from 8% to 6%. The next big Blu-ray release is Iron Man, which hits Blu-ray at the end of the month. Many are expecting it to become the fastest selling Blu-ray title ever, some even think it will reach 1 million units sold. (Personally, I think that's a possibility, but a little too bullish for my tastes.)
