International Details - Updates and More

October 19, 2008

First some updates on Wednesday's numbers. Due to Columbus Day, we were relying on studio estimates instead of final numbers, and while they were mostly accurate, they were not entirely accurate. The Russia film, Admiral (Koltchak), did indeed top the charts with $12.51 million on 1,223 screens in 2 markets over the weekend and $13.31 million in total. Meanwhile, Eagle Eye added $10.88 million on 3,030 screens in 38 markets for a still early total of $29.41 million. Mamma Mia! continues its quest for $400 million with $8.37 million on 3,713 screens in 46 markets for a total of $390.72 million. These three films were very close to the original figures, however, the rest of the top five was different than originally reported, starting with...

  • Burn After Reading, which landed in fourth place with $7.07 million on 1,257 screens in 17 markets for a total $23.32 million. This includes a first place, $2.61 million opening on 318 screens in Spain, while it added $1.71 million on 312 screens during its second weekend in Germany for a total of $5.81 million.
  • Painted Skin fell more than 50%, but still grabbed fifth place with $6.16 million on 1,190 screens in 4 markets for a total of $29.34 million. This is already enough to pay for the film's reported $10 million production budget, and there are plenty more lucrative markets left to open in.
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona returned to the charts in sixth place with $5.66 million on 768 screens in 9 markets for a total of $14.34 million. This includes a first place, $4.59 million opening in France, but that was for the full week.
  • Righteous Kill climbed into seventh place with $5.37 million on 1,446 screens in 18 markets for a total of $22.77 million. In France the film earned $2.59 million on 394 screens, placing second, but that was for the full week. Meanwhile, it fell from second to sixth in Spain with $824,000 on 315 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.92 million after two.
  • WALL-E was right behind, adding $5.35 million on 2,698 screens in 21 markets for a total of $238.13 million. Its biggest market was Germany, where it topped the charts for the third weekend in a row with $2.43 million on 729 screens for a total of $16.03 million. Next up for the film in Italy this weekend, where Cars debuted with $3.28 million and Ratatouille opened with $6.29 million. I anticipate WALL-E's opening to be somewhere in the middle.
  • Suspect X remained in first place in Japan with $5.12 million on 410 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.12 million after two.
  • The House Bunny came within $50,000 of Wednesday's estimate, but is was still five places lower, thanks to new numbers on the previous five movies. It landed in tenth place with $4.95 million on 1,576 screens in 25 markets for a total of $8.60 million. If the film can make $30 million internationally, it will likely show a profit before it hits the home market. If not, it will do so very soon after making its DVD debut.
  • Wanted opened in first place in China with $2.4 million on 454 screens. Meanwhile, it climbed into second place in Japan with $1.05 million on 386 screens over the weekend for a total of $21.30 million after four. However, it was still not enough to lift the film into the top ten. Overall, it made $4.89 million on 1,444 screens in 20 markets for a total of $195.70 million.
  • Mirrors slipped a spot to 12th with $4.79 million on 1,680 screens in 21 markets for a total of $25.44 million. It managed second place during its opening in the U.K. with $1.46 million on 342 screens, while it was down just 21% in Spain adding $1.26 million on 300 screns over the weekend for a two-week total of $3.29 million.
  • No major openings meant Tropic Thunder fell out of the top ten to 13th place with $3.52 million on 1,841 screens in 38 markets for a total of $54.64 million.
  • Beverly Hills Chihuahua added $3.19 million on 899 screens in 6 markets for a total of $10.57 million after just two weeks of release. Its best single market was Mexico where it made $1.60 million on 449 screens for a total of $4.38 million. It was expected to do very well in this market -- it is, after all, a kids movie set partially in Mexico.
  • Body of Lies opened internationally in 15th place with $3.16 million on 607 screens in 7 markets over the weekend for a total of $3.42 million. Of this total, $1.50 million was earned on 292 screens in Australia, where it opened in first place.
  • Disaster Movie opened in Italy in third place with $1.39 million on 234 screens. Overall, it made $2.83 million on 967 screens in 14 markets for a total of $12.84 million.
  • The Baader Meinhof Complex fell from 6th to 17th with $2.66 million on 676 screens in 3 markets for a total of $16.02 million. However, this is not a surprise, since it was a post-holiday weekend in its native Germany.
  • Journey To The Centre of the Earth is coasting on holdovers at the moment while it awaits its opening in Japan and its shot at $100 million internationally. This weekend, it fell to 18th place with $2.49 million on 947 screens in 32 markets for a total of $92.23 million, and if it had no new markets left to open in, it would likely end its run with $97 million, give or take.
  • Entre Les Murs, a.k.a., The Class, opened in tenth place in Italy with $360,000 on 70 screens. In total, it made $2.34 million on 625 screens in 4 markets $10.48 million. Of that, $8.43 million has come from France, including $1.90 million on 512 screens this past weekend.
  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas earned $1.82 million on 261 screens in Spain over the weekend for a total of $8.67 million after three weeks of release. Additionally, it made $522,000 on 201 screens in the U.K. for a total of $5.83 million after a month of release.
  • No Problem opened in second place in Italy and 21st place overall with $2.17 million on 423 screens.
  • Krabat opened in third place in Germany and 22nd place internationally with $2.07 million on 365 screens.
  • Hello opened in India and several other markets, and placed 23rd with $2.03 million on 548 screens in 7 markets, which is rather poor compared to most other similar films. However, it reportedly cost little to make and could still show a profit, eventually.
  • Taken remained potent overseas, earning $2.03 million on 917 screens in 20 markets for a total of $62.61 million. However, there are few major markets left in its run, and it will likely drop off the charts for a while.
  • Nights in Rodanthe opened in the U.K. but barely landed in the top ten with $339,000 on 250 screens. Overall it made $1.81 million on 1,072 screens in 12 markets for a total of $7.00 million.
  • Connected slipped a spot to 26th with $1.67 million on 807 screens in 5 markets for a two-week total of $7.64 million, much of this coming from its native China.
  • Death Race plummeted more than 60% to $1.62 million on 695 screens in 18 markets over the weekend for a total of $20.75 million.
  • Kidnap fared even worse. In fact, the Indian film had the worst performance in the top 30, down 63% to $1.61 million on 763 screens in 17 markets over the weekend for a total of just $7.14 million after two weeks of release.
  • Similarly, Babylon A.D. was down 62% to $1.59 million on 1,529 screens in 30 markets for a total of $42.79 million. It has already dwarfed its domestic total internationally, with a couple of major markets left to go.
  • Rounding out the top 30 was Faubourg 36 with $1.52 million on 616 screens in 3 markets for a total of $8.93 million. This includes $1.56 million on 594 screens in France, but that was for the full week, while its three-week total there is $7.65 million.
