November 9, 2008

The top five on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Saw V slipped a spot to sixth place with $6.44 million on 1703 screens in 26 markets for a total of $16.52 million. This week it opened in fourth place in Russia with $745,000 on 200 screens while in earned seventh place in Mexico with just $148,000 on 120 screens. As far as holdovers go, the film fell more than 60% in the U.K. to $1.55 million on 367 screens for a total of $7.53 million.

  • Burn After Reading fell out of the top five with $5.75 million on 1923 screens in 28 markets for a total of $58.03 million. However, it only fell 30% without any major openings this week, or last week for that matter, so this is an impressive run so far.
  • L'Instinct De Mort opened in eighth place with $4.83 million on 526 screens in 3 markets with a total of $12.46 million in total.
  • Space Chimps climbed into the top ten with $4.40 million on 1126 screens in 12 markets for a total of $27.98 million. The film jumped more than 60% in France to $4.02 million on 568 screens over the week for $6.50 million after two.
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona held onto the final spot in the top ten with $4.15 million on 932 screens in 14 markets for a total of $36.22 million. The film had no major openings, but it did add $1.96 million on 430 screens over the week in France for $11.81 million after four.
  • Eagle Eye fell from fourth to eleventh with $3.86 million on 2278 screens in 49 markets $66.43 million. The film still has openings in France and Italy to go, but it is very unlikely to match its domestic total.
  • WALL-E continues to slide down the charts without any new openings this week. This week it added $3.79 million on 2409 screens in 19 markets for a total of $259.75 million internationally and $482.47 million worldwide. It slipped to second place in Italy with $1.69 million on 422 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.05 million after three.
  • Thanks to a $3.12 million opening on 398 screens in France, Hellboy II - The Golden Army saw significant growth over the past weekend. It pulled in $3.78 million on 1201 screens in 17 markets for a total of $76.46 million. The film has now made more internationally than it did domestically, and depending on how well it does on the home market starting this Tuesday, it could show a profit very, very shortly.
  • Fashion opened in 14th place this week with $3.77 million on 751 screens in 17 markets for a total of $5.30 million. This is the second Indian on the chart this week, and despite being much further down the list, it still opened very, very well for films from this nation.
  • Mamma Mia! added $3.53 million on 2143 screens in 40 markets for a total of $415.10 million internationally.
  • Welcome to the Sticks returned to the charts with $3.26 million on 537 screens in 8 markets for a total of $218.44 million internationally. The film made $1.30 million on 325 screens in a third place opening in Italy, while it made $1.26 million on 160 screens earning second place in Germany.
  • Tropic Thunder fell out of the top ten, it nearly fell out of the top 20 with $3.18 million on 1177 screens in 38 markets for a total of $71.08 million. It has yet to open in Japan, and it has a slim, slim chance at hitting $200 million worldwide, but I wouldn't bet on it.
  • Max Payne absolutely collapsed last weekend down more than 66% and 16 places with $3.06 million on 2272 screens in 45 markets for a total of $23.37 million. The film has yet to open in France, U.K., Germany, and South Korea and could still be a midlevel hit, if it does well in these states.
  • Suspect X slipped to second place in Japan and 19th internationally with $3.01 million on 410 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.44 million after a month of release.
  • Nights in Rodanthe landed in 20th place with $2.65 million on 1293 screens in 26 markets for a total of $21.71 million. It opens in Australia this weekend, but it will have a hard time matching its domestic total, which wasn't particularly great to begin with.
  • Journey to the Centre of the Earth added $2.16 million on 695 screens in 24 markets for a total of $107.43 million. Its best market of the weekend was Japan where it made $1.07 million on 104 screens for a total of $3.06 million.
  • Le Crime Est Notre Affaire fell to seventh place in France and 22nd internationally with $1.91 million on 365 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.72 million.
  • Death Race opened in two major markets this past weekend, but struggled in both. In Australia it managed second place, but made just $649,000 on 170 screens. On the other hand, it pulled in just $284,000 on 193 screens earning fourth place in Mexico. Overall it landed in 23rd place with $1.75 million on 1873 screens in 24 markets for a total of $27.48 million.
  • Mirrors climbed to 24th place with $1.75 million on 2120 screens in 17 markets for a total of $35.40 million. This includes a seventh place opening in Germany where it pulled in $898,000 on 231 screens, which is very weak, but not entirely unexpected.
  • Where The Legend Lives opened in third place in Japan and 25th place internationally with $1.66 million on 326 screens.
  • Disaster Movie returned to the charts in 26th place with $1.64 million on 587 screens in 13 markets for a total of $18.47 million. It did open well in Spain earning $1.42 million on 286 screens earning second place in the process.
  • Mes Stars Et Moi opened in eighth place in France, but it still managed 27th place internationally with $1.59 million on 320 screens.
  • Handsome Suits opened in fourth place in Japan and 28th place internationally with $1.47 million on 233 screens.
