Per Theater Chart Defiant

January 6, 2009

Despite earning mixed reviews, Defiance topped the per theater chart with a massive average of $61,757 in two theaters, and that's over the weekend. In total the film made more than $200,000 in 2 theaters over five days. Gran Torino's per theater average grew by 26% to $34,957 in 84 theaters. At this point, it would be fair to say it has earned some measure of mainstream success, and it expands wide this weekend. Revolutionary Road saw its theater count grow from 3 to 38, while it still managed a per theater average of $25,946. The Wrestler also saw growth with an average of $24,323, and it should expand over the coming weeks. I'm not sure it will expand wide, but it should do reasonably well. Che continues its Oscar qualifying run earning an average of $17,742 in 2 theaters. Last Chance Harvey saw small growth to $17,034 in 6 theaters, but I'm not sure how far it will expand. Waltz with Bashir was the final film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,713 in five theaters.

The only other new release was Good, which was good, but not great, earning an average of $4,754 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Revolutionary Road nearly earned $1 million over the weekend, while it has made more than $1 million in total.
  • The Wrestler also topped $1 million in total, and should also expand.
  • Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has reached $2 million over the weekend, which will be as far as it goes.
  • The Reader's running tally is now over $3 million, and its run is far from over.
  • Frost/Nixon made it to $4 million before the weekend, and $5 million over the weekend. $10 million is practically assured, but it will take a couple more weeks to get there.
  • Gran Torino earned $5 million since last week, while it nearly reached $10 million over the weekend.
  • Milk topped $15 million since last week.
  • As expected, Doubt reached $10 million during the week, and over the weekend its running tally reached $15 million.
  • Slumdog Millionaire continues to excel and now has $25 million in total. Simply amazing.
