International Details - Reading Between the Lines

The top five on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

The Reader nearly reached the top five with $5.14 million on 1169 screens in 17 markets for a total of $28.35 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, including Belgium where it placed fifth with $174,000 on 24 screens over the weekend and $225,000 in total. However, most of its money came from holdovers, like Germany, where the film added $2.89 million on 456 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.44 million after two.

  • Bolt slipped out of the top five but still added $5.05 million on 2811 screens on 30 markets for a total of $172.75 million internationally. The film earned $1.79 million on 635 screens in France for a total of $21.31 million after a month of release. Meanwhile in the U.K. it earned $1.36 million on 534 screens over the weekend and $23.24 million after four.
  • Yatterman: The Movie opened in first place in Japan and eighth place internationally with $4.63 million on 312 screens.
  • No Love In The City opened in first place in Russia with $3.87 million on 538 screens over the weekend and $5.86 million in total.
  • Doraemon: The Movie: The New Record of Nobita: Spaceblazer... Wow. That's a mouthful. Doraemon: The Movie opened in second place in Japan and tenth place internationally with $3.77 million on 364 screens, which is enough to suggest legs in that market.
  • Pink Panther 2 fell out of the top ten with $3.68 million on 2555 screens in 57 markets for a total of $27.51 million. This week it opened in Italy, but flopped with just $614,000 on 198 screens. Next up is Germany this weekend, while it has a few more major markets left to open in over the coming weeks / month.
  • No new major markets left Confessions Of A Shopaholic down 30% to $3.48 million on 1217 screens in 17 markets for a total of $24.14 million. It remained in the top five in the U.K. with $1.36 million on 414 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.54 million after three, which is a lot more than it made here, given the relative size of the two market. The same is true in Italy where it has $4.08 million after two weeks of release, including $1.28 million on 342 screens this past weekend.
  • He's Just Not That Into You was right behind with $3.42 million on 1765 screens in 33 markets for a total of $46.27 million. The film opened in fifth place in Mexico with just $368,000 on 225 screens, and will likely disappear quickly after an opening like that.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remained in first place in both Denmark and Sweden earning a combined $3.30 million on 275 screens in 2 markets for a total of $10.53 million. In the former it made $1.80 million on 115 screens for a total of $6.07 million, while in the latter it made $1.49 million on 160 screens for a total of $4.46 million.
  • Bedtime Stories rocketed into 15th place with $3.18 million on 1179 screens in 22 markets for a total of $96.18 million. The film opened in second place in Spain with $2.04 million on 400 screens, while it debut in Japan this weekend. By the time we have full numbers, it will likely have crossed $100 million internationally.
  • Valkyrie plummeted more than 10 spots this past weekend landing in 16th place with $2.88 million on 2405 screens in 29 markets. However, while its was a sharp decline from the previous week, it still lifted its total to $99.55 million, and it very likely reached the century mark by Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • Milk reached the international chart for the first time in its run with $2.76 million on 779 screens in 25 markets for a total of $15.03 million. More than half of the film's weekend haul came from France where it opened in seventh place with $1.54 million on 243 screens.
  • LOL added $2.66 million on 543 screens in 2 markets for a total of $28.14 million. This includes $2.25 million on 520 screens in its native France for a total of $23.38 million there.
  • Hotel For Dogs added $2.61 million on 1914 screens in 33 markets for a total of $32.13 million. The film had no major openings this past weekend, but it still topped $100 million worldwide. Assuming the production budget was $25 to $35 million as now reported and not the $75 million earlier reports had it, it is closing in on profitability. Even if $75 million was accurate, but it included P&A, then the film should show a profit during its initial push into the home market.
  • Departures added $2.40 million on 196 screens in its native Japan for a total of $46.88 million. Internationally it made $2.60 million on 219 screens for a total of $48.06 million.
  • The Unborn landed in 21st place down from 12th place last weekend... 2112. Cool. ... Moving on. The film added $2.15 million on 796 screens in 17 markets for a total of $14.81 million, including $1.05 million on 297 screens over the weekend in the U.K. for a total of $3.73 million after two.
  • Kochaj I Tancz opened in first place in Poland with $1.98 million on 152 screens, which was enough for 22nd place internationally.
  • The Wrestler climbed a few spots with $1.98 million on 1081 screens in 19 markets for a total of $13.11 million. The film was aided by a third place opening in Italy with $1.11 million on 315 screens, while it struggled in South Korea opening in eighth place with $156,000 on 175 screens over the weekend and $180,000 in total.
  • The International tumbled down to 24th place with $1.97 million on 1561 screens in 31 markets for a total of just $14.61 million. The film has yet to open in Italy, France, Japan, and Spain, but so far it has performed poorly.
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans had the worst week-to-week drop-off down 58% to $1.75 million on 1076 screens in 22 markets for a total of $32.48 million. The film had no new openings this past weekend, but does open in Spain and Japan this weekend and it should bounce back when those numbers are released.
  • Change Of Plans nearly fell of the charts with $1.70 million on 547 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $12.49 million after three. Most of this was earned in France, where it made $1.44 million on 523 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.47 million.
  • Fellow French film, Cyprien, was right behind with $1.61 million on 356 screens in 2 markets over the weekend and $4.97 million after two. Of that total, $4.22 million was earned in France, including $1.37 million on 340 screens this past weekend.
  • Changeling fell to 28th place with $1.54 million on 1112 screens in 35 markets for a total of $70.87 million.
  • Last Chance Harvey made its first appearance on the international chart in 29th place with $1.53 million on 388 screens in 5 markets for an early total of $2.39 million. The film opened in France missing the top ten, but still pulled in $1.04 million on 266 screens for a respectable per screen average.
  • The Triumphant Return Of General Rouge debuted with $1.50 million on 301 screens, which was enough for fourth place in Japan and 30th place internationally. With a sub-$5000 per screen average, it will likely not last long.
