International Details - Duplicity Doubles

April 5, 2009

The top five on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Duplicity doubled its international haul over the weekend landing in sixth place with $6.47 million on 1811 screens in 20 markets for a total of $12.21 million. The film opened in fourth place in France with $2.01 million on 380 screens, while it managed fourth in Russia as well, but with a much weaker $873,000 on 265 screens. It did hold on better than most in the U.K. down just 31% to $775,000 on 355 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.68 million after two.

  • Coco fell from first to seventh with $5.38 million on 906 screens in 3 markets for a total of $22.24 million. Of that total, $19.18 million was earned in France, including $4.55 million on 871 screens over the past weekend. Granted, that was down nearly 60% from its opening last weekend, but it has still earned enough to be considered a solid hit in its native market.
  • Confessions Of A Shopaholic remained in eighth place with $4.75 million on 2141 screens in 36 markets for a total of $44.61 million, which is more than it has earned domestically. The film opened in fifth place in both Spain, with $760,000 on 270 screens, and in South Korea with $599,000 on 213 screens over the weekend and $727,000 in total. The film has yet to open in France and Japan, and it should cross $100 million worldwide when it does.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens remained in first place in Russia with $3.26 million on 757 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.98 million after two. It also earned $666,000 on 71 screens during previews in Mexico. Overall it made $4.16 million on 852 screens in 8 markets for a total of $12.43 million very early in its international run.
  • Männersache fell from fifth to tenth with $4.07 million on 690 screens in 2 markets for a total of $12.10 million. In Germany the film managed a close second place with $3.85 million on 652 screens for a two week total of $11.59 million.
  • Watchmen fell out of the top ten with $3.97 million on 2787 screens in 55 markets for a total of $67.40 million. The film opened in Japan with $1.13 million on 218 screens. On the one hand, that was only enough for eighth place. On the other hand, it was above the $5000 per screen average that is so vital in that market. Somehow, I don't think it will matter.
  • La Première Etoile opened in second place in France and 12th place internationally with $3.42 million on 268 screens in its native market.
  • The Reader added $2.79 million on 1299 screens in 24 markets for a total of $43.16 million. This includes a fourth place, $612,000 opening on 285 screens in South Korea, while the film earned $775,000 in total in that market. Its best market over the weekend was Germany where it added $1.05 million on 490 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.94 million after a month of release.
  • Race to Witch Mountain climbed into the top 30 for the first time during its run with $2.68 million on 1022 screens in 14 markets for an early total of $6.39 million. It opened in third place in both Russia ($894,000 on 226 screens) and in Mexico ($749,000 on 360) but I was hoping for more, especially in the latter market.
  • He's Just Not That Into You added $2.45 million on 1208 screens in 27 markets for a total of $57.30 million internationally.
  • Sex, Party And Lies opened in first place in Spain and 16th place internationally with $2.29 million on 214 screens over the weekend.
  • Meanwhile, Prinzessin Lillifee opened in fourth place in Germany and 17th place internationally with $2.18 million on 555 screens.
  • Yatterman: The Movie earned first place in Japan with $2.13 million on 309 screens over the weekend and $22.21 million after four.
  • Dragonball: Evolution fell another 45% to $2.11 million on 1873 screens in 9 markets for a total of $21.93 million. Not a particularly good sign for the film's upcoming North American release.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remained in the top 20 with $2.07 million on 339 screens in 4 markets for a total of $26.94 million, all in Scandinavia. If it can expand into other European markets, and it does starting in May, it could earn a North American release.
  • Red Cliff returned to the charts in 21st place with $1.96 million on 367 screens in 3 markets for a total of $126.38 million. This past weekend it opened in fifth place in France with $1.62 million on 336 screens, while it managed seventh place in Belgium with $117,000 on 23 screens over the weekend.
  • Bedtime Stories is officially Adam Sandler's biggest international hit with $105.30 million, including $1.95 million on 1114 screens in 21 markets during the past weekend. It opened in Italy but only managed eighth place with $499,000 on 87 screens. However, the film is already a huge success, so this matters little.
  • Push returned to the charts with $1.95 million on 499 screens in 8 markets for a total of $12.02 million. The film opened in Italy but struggled with $951,000 on 197 screens earning fifth place in the process. It is about halfway through its major markets, without a lot to show for it.
  • Doraemon: The Movie returned to second place in Japan while slipping to 24th place internationally with $1.90 million on 364 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.34 million after four.
  • Drop climbed to third place in Japan and 25th place internationally with $1.82 million on 156 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.18 million after two.
  • The Unborn added $1.77 million on 1295 screens in 36 markets for a total of $26.47 million. This is well below its domestic total, and there's not much in terms of major markets ahead.
  • Valkyrie fell 40% during its second weekend of release in Japan, which is very high for the market, adding $1.51 million on 326 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.89 million after two. Overall it made $1.66 million on 1126 screens in 8 markets for a total of $112.06 million.
  • The Haunting in Connecticut started its international run in the U.K. placing third with $1.60 million on 312 screens. This is weaker than its start here, but that is to be expected.
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opened in a number of smaller markets helping it remain in the top 30 one more weekend with $1.59 million on 1177 screens in 27 markets for a total of $40.65 million.
  • Mostri Oggi opened in second in Italy and 30th place internationally with $1.59 million on 406 screens.
