Weekend Estimates: 17 Again Tops Another Good Movie Weekend
April 19, 2009
Zac Efron started his post-High School Musical career with a handsome win at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
17 Again topped the chart with an estimated $24 million and a decent per theater average over $7,000.
State of Play had a good opening, by the standards of recent thrillers, with $14 million.
Among other openers, Crank 2: High Voltage was a relative disappointment, earning just $6.5 million.
That's well below Jason Statham's recent average, most likely thanks to competition with Fast & Furious (down 55% to $12.3 million).
Monsters vs. Aliens remained in 3rd spot in the chart with $12.9 million, which was enough to beat a weak second weekend from Hannah Montana.
The Disney movie was down 61% to $12.7 million.
