The top film on the international scene were published on previously and can be found here.
We've entered the summer schedule and this year there will be a small change. Instead of dealing with just the films that have reached $1 million or more on the international chart, we will be dealing with just the films that have reached $2 million or more. The reason for this change is simple; with the rise of many midlevel markets, reaching $1 million is just not that big of a feat anymore. The best of the rest of this week's selection was Hannah Montana the Movie, which placed a healthy second with $6.95 million on 1300 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $8.96 million. This includes second place openings in the U.K. with $3.03 million on 415 screens in the U.K., which was as expected, and $1.44 million on 346 screens over the weekend in Italy and $1.64 million in total, which was better than expected. Also, it is about a week away from topping $1 million in Poland after earning $124,000 on 105 screens over the weekend giving it $932,000 after three. Combined with the nearly $75 million the movie has earned domestically, and this film is very, very close to showing a profit before the lucrative home market.
- Fast and Furious fell nearly 60% as direct competition took its toll. The film still earned $6.47 million on 3833 screens in 51 markets for a total of $182.34 million after a month of release. With no major markets left, it will have trouble reaching $200 million internationally, but it is still a smash hit, so not hitting one more major milestone is not an issue.
- Monsters vs. Aliens added $5.81 million on 4371 screens in 49 markets for a total of $152.16 million. The film has yet to open in Japan, but it won't be able to match its domestic run when it does. (Unless the film is a monster hit in that market.) Even so, it is already a profitable venture for the studio, so they should be more than happy.
- 17 Again slipped to fifth place with $5.41 million on 1692 screens in 25 markets for a total of $35.91 million. Quite frankly, this is more than I thought it would make in total internationally. This past weekend the film debuted in third place in Spain with $884,000 on 304 screens over the weekend and $1.00 million in total. It earned $1.81 million on 339 screens in France, but that was for the full week, while it now has $5.39 million there in total. The film surpassed $15 million in the U.K. with $798,000 on 413 screens over the weekend and $15.09 million in total, which is more than it made here, after taking into account the size of the two markets.
- City Of Life And Death remained in first during second weekend in China, but slipped to sixth place internationally with $4.96 million on 950 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.89 million after two.
- State Of Play climbed into seventh place with $4.53 million on 1389 screens in 14 markets for a total of $11.88 million. The film was soft in its opening in Italy placing third with $1.15 million on 301 screens over the weekend and $1.30 million in total, while it bombed in South Korea with just $330,000 on 254 screens over the weekend and $412,000 in total. On the other hand, it held on well in the U.K. with $1.46 million on 395 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.88 million after two.
- Thirst opened in first place in South Korea and eighth place internationally with $4.41 million on 493 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.33 million.
- Incognito opened in ninth place internationally with $3.68 million on 480 screens in 3 markets. Of this, $3.55 million was earned on 459 screens in France, where it placed second to Wolverine.
- Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser remained in first place in Japan and held onto the final spot in the top ten internationally with $3.45 million on 338 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.39 million after three.
- Knowing is on the decline down 50% to $3.30 million on 2067 screens in 32 markets for a total of $74.74 million. No major market openings hurt this past weekend, but by the time it opens in Japan, it should have surpassed its domestic total.
- Red Cliff: Part II added $3.13 million on 655 screens during its fourth weekend in Japan. The film now has $36.53 million in that market and $99.73 million internationally. It is a safe assumption that the movie crossed $100 million in total by now.
- OSS 117: Rio Ne Répond Plus fell to 13th place with $2.85 million on 636 screens in 3 markets for a total of $18.91 million. France was the film's biggest market with $2.66 million on 597 screens for a total of $17.81 million after three.
- My Girlfriend Is An Agent climbed two spots to 14th place internationally, but it actually fell from first to second in South Korea with $2.75 million on 383 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.15 million after two.
- Slumdog Millionaire fell to 15th place with $2.65 million on 1608 screens in 39 markets for a total of $219.49 million internationally and $360.73 million worldwide.
- Another weekend with major openings left Race to Witch Mountain in 16th place with $2.26 million on 2056 screens in 31 markets for a total of $33.06 million. It was softer than expected domestically, but it should still hit $100 million worldwide very shortly, while its home market run should be lucrative enough to show a profit.
- Gran Torino is coasting on holdovers, as it opened in its last major market last weekend. It still added $2.23 million on 1483 screens in 34 markets for a total of $109.28 million internationally, which is an excellent total given its estimated $35 million production budget.
- Duplicity grew 50% to $2.03 million on 800 screens in 27 markets for a total of $28.99 million. This includes a second place, $927,000 opening in Germany, which is average for its run so far.
