International Details - Wolverine is Cut Down, but Still Fighting Hard

May 17, 2009

The top film on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Wolverine was pushed into second place on the international chart with $28.95 million on 8982 screens in 93 markets for a total of $121.58 million. This was a 60% drop-off, but that was better than it was domestically, and it appears $300 million worldwide is a sure bet. The film was pushed into third place in the U.K., but still managed a healthy $3.39 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.47 million. It remained in first place in France with $3.95 million on 700 screens, but that was for the full week giving the film $11.80 million after two. It also finished in first place in Brazil with $2.11 million on 609 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.81 million after two. Next up for the film is Mexico, where it opens at the end of May, while it ends its run in Japan in August.

  • Hannah Montana the Movie slipped to third place, but saw growth over the weekend to $8.06 million on 1787 screens in 19 markets for a total of $20.09 million. Growth was aided by the film's first place opening in Spain where it managed $3.76 million on 387 screens. This was almost as much as Wolverine and Star Trek combined made over the weekend. This film was down only 36% in the U.K. for a weekend haul of $1.98 million on 416 screens and a total of $7.27 million. The film's next major opening is Mexico, where it debuts next weekend, while next month it opens in Germany, France, and Australia.
  • 17 Again climbed a spot to fourth with $4.51 million on 1990 screens in 32 markets for a total of $43.05 million. The film had no major market openings, but did manage $1.24 million on 391 screens during the full week in France lifting its total there to $6.76 million. This weekend it opens in a trio of major markets, and could climb the chart another spot depending on how well it does in Germany, Italy, and Japan.
  • Coraline returned to the chart for the first time since February in fifth place with $4.39 million on 739 screens in 15 markets for a total of $14.68 million. The film opened in second place in the U.K. with $3.69 million on 392 screen, which is better than it performed here given the relative size of the two markets. The film's release schedule is spread out, and it doesn't end its run till the beginning of fall.
  • April Bride opened in first place in Japan and sixth place internationally with $4.19 million on 310 screens.
  • My Bloody Valentine 3D returned to the chart in seventh place with $3.29 million on 526 screens in 11 markets for a total of $27.86 million. The film was surprisingly strong in Italy taking top spot with $2.35 million on 278 screens during its opening. The film opens in Germany next weekend, and continues to have openings through till the end of August.
  • Fast and Furious suffered another steep decline down more than 50% to $3.18 million 3559 screens in 53 markets for a total of $188.60 million.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens added $3.02 million on 3659 screens in 48 markets for a total of $158.85 million. The film is coasting on holdovers at the moment, and will till it opens in Japan in July.
  • The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past jumped into 10th place with $2.91 million on 673 screens in 5 markets for a total of $5.73 million. The film opened in third place in Australia with $1.38 million on 219 screens, while it added $1.20 million on 382 screens in the U.K. to its total of 4.03 million.
  • Incognito added $2.53 million on 459 screens in France, but that was for the full week, and now it has $6.18 million in total. Over the weekend it made $2.56 million on 480 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.77 million.
  • State Of Play earned $2.51 million on 1299 screens in 13 markets for a total of $16.64 million. No new markets hurt, but that changes next weekend when it makes its debut in Japan.
  • City Of Life And Death added $2.42 million on 791 screens in two markets for a total of $22.16 million after three weeks of release.
  • Someone I Loved opened in fourth place in France with $2.31 million on 343 screens, while it managed 14th place internationally with $2.37 million on 361 screens in 3 markets.
  • My Girlfriend Is An Agent remained in first place in South Korea and placed 15th internationally with $2.34 million on 392 screens over the weekend, while it has earned $12.80 million after three.
  • Knowing added $2.26 million on 1595 screens in 31 markets for a total of $78.63 million. It has now made more internationally than it did domestically, and it has a shot at $100 million, if it does well in Japan, Italy, and the handful of smaller markets it has yet to open in.
  • The Boat That Rocked returned to the chart in 17th place with $2.02 million on 1139 screens in 18 markets for a total of $18.76 million. It earned $1.48 million on 291 screens during its sixth place opening in France, but that was for the full week. At this point, I think the movie will make about $20 to $30 million here, assuming it earns a semi-wide release when it opens at the end of August.
