DVD Sales - Torino Runs a Victory Lap

June 30, 2009

Gran Torino was able to top all new releases to earn first place on this week's DVD sales chart. It was able to do this with sales of 1.44 million units and $19.40 million for the week, which represents just a 45% drop-off for the week, and 4.05 million units and $62.33 million in total, which is in the top five for the year. Second place went to Madea Goes to Jail with 1.07 million units sold for revenue of $17.31 million. Friday the 13th made its home market debut in third place with 428,000 units and $6.90 million, which is lower than expected. It did perform better on High Definition, on the other hand. He's Just Not That Into You was the only other holdover in the top five, as it placed fourth with 419,000 units for the week and 1.79 million after three; however, its sales total of $29.96 million is a little weak for a movie that made nearly $100 million theatrically. Rounding out the top five was Family Guy - Volume 7 with 274,000 units / $7.65 million.

The only other new release to chart was Burn Notice - Season Two, which placed 21st with 91,000 units sold and $2.91 million in consumer spending.

Looking at the High Definition numbers, we find surprising strength. I say surprising, because two of the top three new releases this week didn't even come out on Blu-ray. But despite that, overall sales were up 4.4% to $20.8 million. Compared to last year, growth was a phenomenal 219%. Compared to DVD, things were not as rosy, as Blu-ray represented 8.2% of total sales and 8% of the top 20 comparison, but like I said, there was real weakness in High Definition releases. The best-seller for the second week in a row was Gran Torino, which sold just over 70,000 units for the week giving it a total of just under 500,000 units. Friday the 13th was right behind with 65,000 units, while Ghostbusters was third with just under 60,000 units. That's amazing for a catalogue title.
