International Top of the Chart - Joe Wraps Up Summer Season

August 12, 2009

The final summer blockbuster release of the year, G.I. Joe, opened in first place on the international chart this weekend with $43.04 million on 6,381 screens in 35 markets. However, while it came out first overall, its opening in most markets was just average.

Its biggest market in terms of raw dollars was South Korea where it made $4.44 million on 526 screens for $5.81 million, but that was only enough for third place behind two local films. In France it earned $4 million, but that was only enough for second place behind Up. On the other hand, the film topped the chart in Mexico with $2.26 million on 750 screens.

It had a string of second place debuts in a trio of major markets, earning $2.84 million on 442 screens in the U.K., behind the opening of The Ugly Truth. Spain gave it $2.57 million on 462 screens for the weekend, behind the sophomore stint of Up. In Australia, the film had the best per screen average with $10,560, earning second place with $2.35 million on 223 screens, also behind the opening on The Ugly Truth. On the other hand, it only managed fifth place in Japan with $1.83 million on 385 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.43 million.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was pushed to second place, but we will get to that film, and the rest of the multi-million dollar movies this weekend.
