International Details - Nothing Small About Petit

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Le Petit Nicolas debuted in sixth place internationally with $9.39 million on 618 screens in 3 markets. Of that total, $8.88 million was earned on 571 screens in France, which was more than five times the amount earned by the second place film.

  • Inglourious Basterds fell out of the top five but still added $8.93 million on 2604 screens in 43 markets for a total of $142.18 million internationally and $260.45 million worldwide. It managed a close second place during its opening in Italy with $2.93 million on 465 screens while adding $1.83 million on 475 screens over the weekend in Spain for a total of $11.22 million after two.
  • Vicky the Viking returned to the top ten with $6.40 million on 1253 screens in 4 markets for a total of $37.79 million. The film opened in third place in Spain with $1.68 million on 358 screens. Meanwhile it added $4.18 million on 748 screens in Germany giving it a total of $28.60 million in that one market. Since the film cost about $11 million to make, it is already a massive hit, and if it can expand throughout Europe, it could be the beginning of a massive franchise based on the books / TV series.
  • Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs grew by 34% to $6.32 million on 1387 screens in 31 markets for a total of $21.87 million. The film opened in first place in Brazil with $1.32 million on 247 screens. Meanwhile it added $1.64 million on 401 screens in the U.K. for a total of $7.13 million after three weeks of release in that market.
  • G-Force remained in tenth place with $5.90 million on 2122 screens in 32 markets for a total of $101.04 million internationally. The film expanded in Australia earning $1.68 million on 350 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.43 million after three.
  • Fame fell out of the top ten with $5.68 million on 1314 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $16.79 million. The film opened in a few smaller markets, but its biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in first place with $2.61 million on 460 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.96 million after two.
  • District 9 fell to 12th place with $5.00 million on 2456 screens in 9 markets over the weekend for a total of $64.20 million.
  • The Final Destination fell again this past week but still added $4.66 million on 1968 screens in 39 markets for a total of $88.21 million. The film opened in South Korea, but bombed with just $800,000 on 244 screens over the weekend and $1.01 million in total. That said, it should still have little trouble reaching $100 million internationally.
  • Two Indian films were next with Wake Up Sid placing 14th with $4.17 million on 635 screens in 16 markets.
  • Do Knot Disturb was right behind with $3.97 million on 953 screens in 17 markets, which is a strong start for an Indian film, but it is struggling to maintain its early momentum.
  • The Girl Who Played With Fire is holding strong despite a lack of major market openings. This past weekend it earned $3.44 million on 661 screens in 5 markets for a total of $22.13 million after three weeks of release. It will take a while before it catches up to its predecessor, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, if it does catch up to its predecessor, but it is still doing amazing business.
  • Baarìa remained in first place in Italy wth $3.40 million on 527 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.76 million after two.
  • Closer To Heaven remained in first place in South Korea with $3.27 million on 475 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.16 million after two.
  • The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 plummeted from 9th place to 19th place with $3.18 million on 2037 screens in 41 markets for a total of $75.53 million internationally. This is more than it made domestically, but disappointing compared to its production budget.
  • [REC] 2 opened in first place in Spain and 20th place internationally with $3.13 million on 352 screens in its native market. This is significantly better than the $2.35 million, third place opening the original managed back in 2007. That film made $27.12 million internationally, but was released direct-to-DVD here. We will see if this one's fate is different.
  • The Invention Of Lying made its debut on the international chart in 21st place thanks to a second place, $2.77 million opening on 368 screens in the U.K.
  • The Sword With No Name remained in second place in South Korea with $2.60 million on 452 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.73 million after two.
  • Toy Story 3D opened on the international scene in 23rd place with $2.53 million on 428 screens in 4 markets. Almost all of this came from the U.K. where it debuted in third place with $2.04 million on 251 screens.
  • Mao's Last Dancer opened in second place in Australia and 24th place with $2.41 million on 266 screens.
  • The Proposal fell more than ten spots to 25th place with $2.29 million on 863 screens in 27 markets for a total of $144.05 million. The film opened in Japan in a couple of weeks, and when it does it will reach $150 million internationally.
  • Whatever Works added $2.19 million on 471 screens in 7 markets to its total of $15.17 million internationally. The film is doing well for a Woody Allen movie, but it is too soon to tell where it will end up on his all-time list.
  • My Fair Gentleman was the third Chinese film in the top 30 landing in 27th place with $1.93 million on 425 screens.
  • Gamer rose a couple spots to 28th place with $1.90 million on 935 screens in 19 markets for a total of $14.53 million. It will likely top its domestic run before too long, but it will need to be a much bigger hit on the home market just to break even.
  • 500 Days of Summer nearly fell out of the top 30 with $1.80 million on 739 screens in 9 markets for a total of $11.83 million. It's rare for an independent film to thrive internationally, so the studio should be very happy with this result so far.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo returned to the international chart in 30th place with $1.78 million on 360 screens in 8 markets for a total of $77.07 million. The film opened in fourth place in Germany with $1.57 million on 214 screens.
