International Details - An Ugly Milestone

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

The Ugly Truth reached a major milestone over the weekend with $5.75 million on 2046 screens in 55 markets for a total of $102.27 million internationally. Its biggest market of the weekend was Spain, where it added $1.86 million on 360 screens for a total of $5.17 million. With a debut in Italy a few weeks away, it will likely fall sharply next weekend, but should have no trouble earning $200 million worldwide before its run is over.

  • Pope Joan opened in first place in Germany with $4.44 million on 465 screens, while it was seventh internationally with $4.98 million on 565 screens in 3 markets.
  • Le Petit Nicolas remained solid down just one spot to eighth with $4.81 million on 678 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total $31.76 million after four. The film pulled in $6.70 million on 628 screens in France, but that was for the full week, while it now has $31.74 million in that market.
  • Inglourious Basterds fell from fifth to ninth with $4.80 million on 2221 screens in 48 markets for a total of $173.74 million internationally and $293.13 million worldwide. The film opened in South Korea over the weekend, so it might have reached $300 million worldwide by today, but even if it hasn't quite got there, it won't be long now.
  • Saw VI started its international run in 10th place with $4.73 million on 946 screens in 11 markets. This includes opening in the U.K. where it placed second with $2.83 million on 375 screens, which is inline with its opening here. It wasn't as popular in Australia where it only managed fourth place with $846,000 on 164 screens.
  • Good Morning President opened in first place in South Korea with $4.39 million on 566 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.04 million.
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus shot up into 12th place with $4.32 million on 566 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.68 million. The film opened in second place in Italy with $2.70 million on 227 screens, but it bombed in Spain with just 348,000 on 71 screens. Meanwhile it held well in the U.K. down just 32% to $1.01 million on 268 screens over the weekend for a $3.37 million after two weeks of release. At this point, I would predict a box office of $20 to $40 million here, depending on if it gets a wide release or not.
  • Couples Retreat fell from 4th to 13th with $4.04 million on 946 screens in 7 markets for a still early total of $17.39 million. The film had a couple smaller openings, but it returned to first place in Australia with $1.23 million on 223 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.25 million after three weeks of release. It also did earned more than $1 million in the U.K. ($1.52 million on 379 screens) and Russia ($1.00 million on 296). The film has made $5.07 million and $3.16 million in those two markets respectively.
  • Surrogates climbed a spot to 14th with $3.96 million on 1965 screens in 35 markets for a total of $52.71 million. There were no major market openings for the film, but it did place third in Belgium with $347,000 on 44 screens, and it did opening in several other, even smaller markets.
  • The Girl Who Played With Fire climbed into 15th place with $3.93 million on 723 screens in 7 markets for a total of $35.55 million. This includes a second place, $2.70 million opening on 353 screens in Spain.
  • The number one film in Spain was Agora, which earned $3.44 million on 475 screens over the weekend for a total of $21.67 million after three.
  • Männerherzen added $3.26 million on 688 screens in 3 markets for a total of $16.96 million after three weeks of release. This includes $2.76 million earned on 592 screens in Germany giving the film $14.68 million in its native market.
  • Julie & Julia grew by 36% to $3.23 million on 1143 screens in 41 markets for a total of $20.83 million internationally. The film opened in fifth place in Italy with $846,000 on 152 screens, which is about average for its international run so far.
  • District 9 had one of the worst week-to-week drop-offs on the chart this past week falling from 6th place to 19th place with $3.21 million on 1726 screens in 39 markets for a total of $82.53 million internationally and $198.03 million worldwide. It is likely already at $200 million worldwide, but that will be the film's last major milestone.
  • I Give My First Love to You opened in first place in Japan and 20th place internationally with $3.07 million on 302 screens.
  • Fame fell out of the top twenty with $2.98 million on 1616 screens in 24 markets for a total of $39.49 million. There was some talk before the film opened in theaters that this would be the start of a new franchise. That talk has ended.
  • Cirque du Freak - The Vampire's Assistant started its international run in 22nd place with $2.93 million on 687 screens in 3 markets. This includes a second place, $1.48 million opening on 297 screens in Russia, while it pulled in $1.30 million on 385 screens in the U.K. for a fifth place debut.
  • The Final Destination fell from 8th to 23rd with $2.84 million on 1227 screens in 44 markets for a total of $106.93 million internationally and $173.07 million worldwide.
  • The Unbroken opened in second place in Japan and 24th place internationally with $2.73 million on 403 screens.
  • The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 returned to the chart in 25th place with $2.58 million on 1982 screens in 22 markets for a total of $83.54 million. The film opened in China with an estimated $2 million on 1200 screens.
  • The Fantastic Mr. Fox started its international run in the U.K. with $2.48 million on 483 screens, which was enough for third place in that markets and 26th place internationally.
  • Vicky the Viking has likely spent its last weekend in the top 30, unless it managed to expand across Europe, that is. This past weekend in placed 27th with $2.30 million on 1261 screens in 4 markets for a total of $53.05 million. Of that total, the film has earned $39.27 million in Germany, including $1.61 million on 816 screens over the weekend.
  • The Message also nearly fell out of the top 30 with $2.19 million on 466 screens in 4 markets for a total of $30.45 million.
  • Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji fell to third place in Japan and 29th place internationally with $2.18 million on 306 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.41 million after three.
  • Rounding out the top 30 was All the Best with $2.15 million on 866 screens in 15 markets for a total of $7.80 million. This was down just 12% from its opening, which is an amazing hold for an Indian film.
