DVD Releases for December 23, 2003

December 22, 2003

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. In fact, this year the home market will total more than $20 billion - more than twice the total domestic box office. Starting today I will have a weekly column highlighting new DVD releases for the week. This week we have a few limited releases that probably escape the public's attention the first time around. And we also have a few wide releases that were rightfully ignored the first time around.

Here's a list of DVDs released tomorrow, December 23, 2003. This list is dedicated to all those how like to leave their shopping to the last minute.

Alex & Emma - (Buy from Amazon: Widescreen or Pan and Scan): Despite Rob Reiner's track record, this film was both a critical and box office disappointment. (Warning: You'll see that phrase a lot this column.)

Anything Else - (Buy from Amazon): The latest from Woody Allen was a disappointment both critically and at the box office.

L'Auberge Espagnole - (Buy from Amazon): L'Auberge Espagnole, a.k.a. The Spanish Apartment, never played in more than 100 theatres but managed to make more at the box office than the previous film on the list. It also received the best reviews of any film on today's list.

I Capture the Castle - (Buy from Amazon): Another limited release, I Capture the Castle didn't have the level of success as L'Auberge Espagnole. But it should easily make more in the home market.

Jeepers Creepers 2 - (Buy from Amazon): Despite costing more than the orginal Jeepers Creepers 2 was unable to match the original either critically or at the box office.

The Medallion - (Buy from Amazon): Yet another critical and box office disappointment, this time staring Jackie Chan. I swear next week it will pick up.

X-Files: Seasons 1 through 7 - (Buy from Amazon): The first seven seasons of X-Files is the only entry from the TV on DVD section, but its huge. Seven season, 46 DVDs, more than 5 DAYS total running time. Perfect for any fan of the X-Files who didn't bother to buy any of the first seven seasons individually.
