Only three new releases reached the top 30 on this week's sales chart, and only one of those reached the top five. However, that film, Law Abiding Citizen, was able to win the race to the top with 830,000 units sold for opening week sale of $8.29 million.
Up climbed into second place thanks to its Oscar nominations, which obviously aided its DVD sales for the week. It managed to sell 657,000 units for the week, lifting its totals to 9.76 million units and $164.21 million. The Hangover also saw growth this week, maybe because so many people were saying that it was snubbed at the Oscars. Regardless, it sold 590,000 units over the week and generated $7.21 million in sales. Overall it has made $154.53 million from 8.40 million units sold. Couples Retreat fell from first to fourth with 276,000 units sold for the week and 1.57 million units sold after two. Star Trek returned to the chart in fifth place with 221,000 units sold over the week for totals of 6.60 million / $96.55 million.
The best of the rest of the new releases was Halo Legends, which managed a better than expected eighth place with a 168,000 units / $2.56 million opening week. Scooby Doo: Abracadabra-Doo was also a surprise entrant in the top 30, placing 21st with 61,000 units / $797,000 sold during its first week of release.
It was another average week for Blu-ray. The format sold $18.6 million over the week, which was 7.8% lower than last week, but just shy of 40% more than last year. The number one selling Blu-ray was Law Abiding Citizen, which sold an estimated 320,000 units over the week, while Halo Legends was well back in second place with about 75,000 units sold.
