International Details: Shutter Slips to Sixth

April 11, 2010

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Shutter Island fell to sixth place with $6.64 million on 2870 screens in 39 markets for a total of $135.53 million internationally and $258.97 million worldwide. With a debut in Japan this weekend, it could climb back into the top five. Even if it doesn't, it still has to be considered a financial success.

  • Kick-Ass started its box office run with a third place, $5.90 million debut on 403 screens in the U.K. On the one hand, third place isn't great. On the other hand, it opened the same weekend as Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon, so the competition was extreme. If it does as well here as it did there, it could make more than $30 million during its opening.
  • Avatar fell out of the top five for the first time during its run, but it still added $5.68 million on 1451 screens in 37 markets over the weekend for a total of $1.96 billion internationally and $2.70 billion worldwide.
  • The Blind Side fell to ninth place with $5.26 million on 1831 screens in 28 markets for a total of $32.70 million internationally. No major market opening hurt its performance, but it was able to hold strong in the U.K., down just 24% to $1.53 million on 368 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.20 million after two.
  • Remember Me remained in tenth place with $4.91 million on 2165 screens in 30 markets for a total of $19.24 million. It opened in the U.K. this past weekend but missed the top five with $1.51 million on 354 screens.
  • Future X-Cops opened in China and Hong Kong with a combined $4.44 million on 423 screens, which was enough for eleventh place internationally.
  • Heartbreaker fell to 12th place with $3.69 million on 472 screens in 3 markets for a total of $19.89 million after three weeks of release. In France it added $3.57 million on 436 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.42 million after three.
  • Chico Xavier opened in first place in Brazil with $3.49 million on 340 screens, which was enough for 13th place internationally.
  • Green Zone fell from seventh to 14th place with $2.85 million on 1527 screens in 27 markets for a total of $33.84 million, which is just a tiny bit more than what it has made domestically so far.
  • She's Out Of My League debuted in 15th place with $2.47 million on 650 screens in 5 markets. Of that, $1.30 million was earned on 367 screens in Russia, enough for second place. It placed fifth in Australia with $971,000 on 182 screens.
  • 22 Bullets fell to 16th place internationally, adding $2.42 million on 518 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.90 million.
  • Fellow French film, The Round Up, placed 17th with $2.40 million on 462 screens in 3 markets for a total of $22.30 million.
  • La Vita è Una Cosa Meravigliosa opened in first place in Italy and 18th place internationally with $2.37 million on 414 screens.
  • Tout Ce Qui Brille added $2.33 million on 322 screens in 3 markets for a total of $5.92 million after two weeks of release.
  • The Ghost Writer slipped to 20th place with $2.30 million on 864 screens in 11 markets for a total of $19.67 million.
  • Beauty On Duty debuted in 21st place with $2.29 million on 297 screens in 2 markets, China and Hong Kong.
  • My Father's Guest opened in seventh place in France. Overall it placed 22nd with $2.27 million on 250 screens in 3 markets.
  • Just Another Pandora's Box plummeted more than 50%, falling from eighth place to 23rd with $2.10 million on 339 screens in 5 markets for a total of $18.60 million after three weeks of release.
  • The Book of Eli fell nine spots to 24th with $2.02 million on 941 screens in 23 markets for a total of $50.82 million internationally. Its international run is not yet over, while it is on pace to show a profit during its initial push into the home market.
  • Dear John climbed a spot to 25th with $1.91 million on 914 screens in 11 markets for a total of $14.23 million. In Mexico, the film opened in ninth place with just $196,000 on 200 screens over the weekend and $248,000 in total. Meanwhile in France, it missed the top ten with $530,000 on 243 screens.
  • Doraemon The Movie: Nobita's Mermaid Legend has spent a month on top of the Japanese box office, this time adding $1.74 million on 366 screens to its running tally of $29.37 million.
  • The Tooth Fairy returned to the chart in 27th place with $1.67 million on 702 screens in 19 markets for a total of $44.03 million and $102.60 million worldwide. This is more than twice what it cost to make, so assuming the film does relatively well on the home market, it should show a decent profit.
  • The third Chinese / Hong Kong co-production to chart this week was Fire Of Conscience, which placed 28th with $1.63 million on 221 screens in 3 markets during its opening weekend of release.
  • I Love You, Philip Morris returned to the chart, barely, placing 29th with $1.58 million on 466 screens in 10 markets for a running tally of $12.03 million. Its only major market opening of the weekend was in Italy where it placed fifth with $1.12 million on 235 screens.
  • Happy Family remained in third place in Italy, falling to 30th place internationally with $1.57 million on 350 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.95 million after two.
