International Top Five: Titans Titanic but Alice is Wonderful

April 21, 2010

Clash of the Titans tread water, down just 2% to $52.67 million on 10,165 screens in 55 markets for a total of $191.64 million internationally and $324.24 million worldwide. The film had a surprisingly strong start in Mexico, earning $7.18 million on 980 screens, which is close to the amount Alice in Wonderland opened with last month. It also placed first in Italy with $4.26 million on 533 screens. With an opening in Japan this weekend and Brazil next month (as well as some smaller markets), hitting $300 million internationally shouldn't be an issue. It could reach $500 million worldwide.

A pair of first place debuts in a couple of major markets helped Alice in Wonderland climb into second place. Over the weekend it made $33.15 million on 7044 screens in 53 markets for a total of $503.95 million internationally and $827.98 million worldwide. This includes $14.33 million on 859 screens during its debut in Japan and $10.17 million on 644 screens in its opening in Spain. With its Brazilian debut this weekend, it has a shot at reaching $900 million worldwide, which probably won't be enough to keep the film in top place at the end of the year (I predict that Harry Potter win in the end) but it could be enough to help it place in the top three for the year.

How To Train Your Dragon slipped to third place with $16.51 million on 6323 screens in 54 markets for a total of $177.75 internationally and $336.00 million worldwide. The film was almost entirely dependent on holdovers again this weekend, but it was strong in that regard. In the U.K. it dipped just 8% to $1.95 million over the weekend for a total of $19.91 million after three. It remained in first place in Australia, adding $1.92 million on 344 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.99 million after four.

Date Night climbed into the top five for the first time in its run with $7.96 million on 2797 screens in 41 markets for a total of $17.38 million. The film opened in Germany, but only managed $1.07 million on 554 screens. Meanwhile, it was down only 19% in Australia adding $1.59 million on 303 screens, which was enough for second place over the weekend and lifted its total to $4.44 million.

The Bounty Hunter remained in fifth place with $6.67 million on 2725 screens in 49 markets for a total of $51.08 million. Its biggest opening of the weekend came in France where it made $999,000 on 271 screens, though it was only enough for seventh place. It managed third place in Brazil with $879,000 on 135 screens. The film also opened in South Korea, but it bombed with just $188,000 on 138 screens over the weekend and $220,000 in total.
