International Details: Iron No Longer Golden, But Still Rich

May 23, 2010

The top films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Iron Man 2 slipped to second place with $30.47 million on 10,223 screens in 57 markets for a total of $245.75 million internationally and $456.95 million worldwide. While this is impressive, its per theater average has become very weak and the competition is heating up. Look for sharp declines in the film's screen count over the next few weeks. That said, the original Iron Man earned a total of $264 million internationally and it is likely that the sequel has already topped that figure. It has also likely topped $500 million worldwide, while $600 million globally is a safe bet, so there's no reason for the studio to worry about shedding screens at this point. The film's biggest individual market so far is still the U.K. where it has made $25.80 million, including $2.30 million on 491 screens this past weekend. South Korea is right behind with $2.11 million on 600 screens over the weekend and $25.27 million after two.

  • Alice in Wonderland added $11.48 million on 3338 screens in 42 markets for a total of $650.54 million internationally and $982.08 million worldwide. The film has now surpassed Harry Potter and the Philospoher's Stone and sits in sixth place on the all time chart. A gross of $1 billion has become a lot more likely. Additionally, the film reached the century mark in Japan with $4.76 million on 858 screens over the weekend for a total of $101.31 million after a month of release.
  • A Nightmare On Elm Street climbed a spot to fourth with $8.29 million on 2251 screens in 25 markets for a still early total of $17.36 million. The film opened in fifth place in France with $1.75 million on 244 screens over the weekend while it managed third in Mexico with $1.10 million on 300. Its best holdover was in Russia where it slipped to second place with $1.00 million on 527 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.93 million after two. This was down 63% from its opening, but this is not unreasonable given the market.
  • How To Train Your Dragon climbed a couple spots to fifth place with $7.66 million on 4414 screens in 50 markets for a total of $221.77 million internationally and $429.42 million worldwide. This includes a $3 million opening on 2500 screens in China, while it opens in South Korea this week and Japan next month.
  • The Back-up Plan added $5.23 million on 1985 screens in 31 markets for a total of $14.27 million after four weeks of release. In Germany the film opened with $989,000 on 367 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.11 million, while in Italy it managed third place with $786,000 on 232.
  • Clash of the Titans fell to seventh place with $4.81 million on 3591 screens in 55 markets for a total of $303.38 million internationally and $463.51 million worldwide. $500 million worldwide is out of reach, but it has already made enough to ensure profitability.
  • Ip Man 2 earned $4.77 million on 688 screens in 8 markets over the weekend for a total of $43.92 million after 3. This is already double the final box office of the original Ip Man, but this is partially explained by the sudden boom in the Chinese box office. Even so, this is impressive growth.
  • Date Night returned to ninth place with $4.74 million on 2425 screens in 39 markets for a total of $48.18 million internationally. The film opened in France, but struggled, landing in sixth place with $1.68 million on 330 screens. That said, it is already a solid hit and it has likely made more than it cost to make and advertise. It should earn a solid profit on the home market.
  • Camping 2 fell to tenth place with $4.70 million on 743 screens in 3 markets for a total of $32.20 million. It was knocked out of top spot in France, again, adding $3.69 million on 703 screens over the weekend for a total of $25.76 million after four.
  • The Housemaid opened with $4.48 million on 495 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.48 million. This was enough for 11th place internationally and first place in South Korea.
  • L'amour, C'est Mieux à Deux climbed three spots to 12th place with $2.82 million on 380 screens in 3 markets for an early total of $6.04 million. In France it added $2.26 million on 366 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.90 million after two.
  • The Last Song grew by 1% to $2.80 million on 1213 screens in 19 markets for a total of $19.70 million. The film opened in third place in Denmark with $196,000 on 33 screens over the weekend and $247,000 in total.
  • Trick: The Movie - Psychic Battle remained in second place in Japan but fell 35% from its opening with $2.59 million on 320 screens. This was enough for 14th place internationally, lifting its total to $9.17 million after two weeks of release.
  • Green Zone returned to the chart in 15th place with $2.28 million on 651 screens in 22 markets for a total of $55.14 million. It was aided by a third place opening in Japan, where it made $1.75 million on 258 screens over the weekend and $2.40 million in total.
