International Top of the Chart: Sex Supplants Persia on Top

June 9, 2010

Sex and the City 2 expanded worldwide this week, climbing into top spot with $40.04 million on 7010 screens in 51 markets for a total of $88.68 million internationally. It's biggest opening was in Australia where it earned an easy first place with $7.6 million on 562 screens, including previews. This may seem impressive at first glance; after all, it's equivalent to an $80 million opening here. However, the original made as much when it opened there two years ago, so this is weaker than expected, as internationally the film had been showing strong growth compared to its predecessor in many markets.

It was also able to grab top spot in France with $3.56 million on 526 screens, while it was a very competitive third in Russia with $3.44 million on 658 screens. The film remained in first place during its second weekend in the U.K. despite falling by 60% to $3.56 million on 531 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.69 million after two. It held on better in Germany, down only 41% and remaining in top spot with $3.37 million on 881 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.02 million after two.

Next up for the film is South Korea, where it debuts this weekend, while the film should hit $100 million internationally when it does.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was right behind, in second place with $37.14 million on 10,097 screens in 48 markets for a total of $156.80 million internationally and $216.43 million worldwide. Its only major market opening of the weekend came in Brazil where it placed first with $2.19 million on 367 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.03 million. This is equivalent to $60 to $80 million here. The film remained in first place in Mexico with $2.65 million on 882 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.53 million after two, while it slipped to second place in France with $2.71 million on 652 screens over the weekend, lifting its total to $8.64 million. It hasn't done as well in the U.K., adding $1.18 million on 477 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $9.18 million after three weeks of release.

Next up is Raajneeti, but we will get to that film and the rest of the multimillion dollar movies on the weekend.
