Weekend Estimates: The Other Guys Puts Inception Run to Rest

August 8, 2010

After three weekends at the top, Inception finally slipped to second place this weekend, thanks to an impressive debut from The Other Guys. The Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg comedy posted a very solid $35.6 million, with a per theater average within touching distance of $10,000. That's the second-best opening weekend for both actors (behind Talladega Nights and Planet of the Apes respectively), and should set the movie up for a good late Summer run.

Inception was down 32% at $18.6 million and is heading for a final domestic total over $250 million. It maintained second place thanks to a slightly soft opening for Step Up 3D, which earned $15.5 million to continue a slow decline in opening numbers for the franchise (Step Up opened with $20.7 million, Step Up 2 the Streets $18.9 million).

The rest of the chart had a decidedly end of Summer feel to it. Dinner for Schmucks and Charlie St. Cloud both declined steeply from their opening weekends. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore was down a more gentle 44%, but has only accumulated $26 million to date, so the decline will hardly cheer Warner Bros..

In limited release, Middle Men and Twelve both performed poorly after taking the always-risky path of opening in 200 theaters nationwide. The former averaged just over $1,000 per theater, the latter just under $500. Flipped did better in 45 theaters, averaging a little over $5,000, which gives it a shot of expanding further in a few weeks.
