Awards Season - SAG Solidifies Awards Season Picture

December 17, 2010

The SAG nominations were handed out this week, and while there were a couple of interesting notes, overall there was a decided lack of surprises. The King's Speech and The Fighter led the way with four nominations each, while Black Swan and The Kids Are All Right were right behind with three. All four have been considered Awards Season players for a long time, so their success with SAG merely confirms that and is not shocking in the least.

The categories and nominations are...

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Notes and Reactions...

  • As mentioned at the top, The King's Speech and The Fighter led the way with four nominations each; however, I would give the tie-breaker to The King's Speech, as it earned its nominations in four different categories, so it has a chance at winning all four. Meanwhile, vote-splitting will likely hurt The Fighter in the end.
  • The Social Network was nominated for Best Cast, but only picked up one individual nod.
  • True Grit picked up a couple nominations, which is not surprising given its reviews, but it was shut out at the Golden Globes.
  • Hilary Swank earned a nomination for Conviction, and Annette Bening can't be happy with that. That's a joke, sort of. Annette Bening has lost an Oscar race to Hilary Swank, twice. It could happen a third time, but it would be an upset.
  • Hailee Steinfeld picked up a nomination for True Grit, which is her first theatrical performance. That's an impressive feat.
