DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 1st, 2011

February 28, 2011

It is an amazingly slow week on the home market with no first run releases that did well enough to be considered midlevel hits. That is if you don't count Megamind, which came out on Friday. There are a few that are worth picking up, but only one is a real contender for Pick of the Week: Bambi on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack.

127 Hours - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Long thought to be an Awards Season player, the film earned astronomical reviews and earned a number of award nominations, but it was mostly shut out in terms of wins. It's difinitely worth checking out; in fact, it's worth picking up. It could even be Pick of the Week material, but I won't know till the screener arrives.

Bambi - Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
The last of the five classic films that are considered the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. It came out nearly 70 years ago, but has it aged well? And does the Blu-ray do it justice? Check out our review to find out.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 127 Hours, Bambi, Burlesque, The Cable Guy, Daughters of Darkness, Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia, Faster, Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould, Harry Connick, Jr.: In Concert on Broadway, Love & Other Drugs, Megamind, Michael Jordan to the Max, Out of Sight, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, Scooby Doo: Curse of the Lake Monster, S.W.A.T.: Firefight, and The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti
While there are several Blu-rays worth checking out this week, there's only one that jumps out as a must have. That Blu-ray is Bambi.

Burlesque - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
When this movie was announced, a lot of people were thinking it would be an utter catastrophe. However, while its reviews were hardly strong, they were far from the disaster many were expecting. In fact, campy but entertaining seems to be the consensus here. Extras on the DVD include an audio commentary track, full musical performances, outtakes, and more. Meanwhile, the Blu-ray has a few exclusives and costs just 20% more. The movie is not for everyone, but if you are a fan of the genre, it's worth picking up.

Cake Boss: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon
Ace of Cakes is so much better.

Faster - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of a handful of releases where I'm still waiting on the screener. I like Dwayne Johnson and while the film only earned mixed reviews, I'm hoping for an entertaining ride, if not an intellectual one.

Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This documentary earned amazing reviews, but never really found an audience in theaters. This is the fate of most documentaries. With a few deleted / additional interviews, the film is worth picking for fans of the pianist, or of documentaries in general, while the Blu-ray only costs about 10% more, so it's the better deal.

Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 - Buy from Amazon
How slow is this week? According to Amazon.com, this is the third best selling release of the week. Granted, Jillian Michaels is one of the most popular exercise gurus, but even on a slow week, she shouldn't make it into the top ten.

Leave It to Beaver: Season 6 - Buy from Amazon
The Megaset was released awhile ago, so these are for people who are only interested in select seasons.

Love & Other Drugs - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film had a lot of Awards Season buzz going into its release, but that turned out to be too optimistic. Granted, it wasn't a bad movie, but its reviews were just mixed. Extras on the DVD / Blu-ray are okay, but not great, and for most a rental will be enough.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 25th.

Megamind - Buy from Amazon: DVD, DVD Double-Pack, or Blu-ray / DVD Combo-Pack
One of those releases that straddle two weeks. It came out last Friday, while the review was published the day before. Was it worth having to wait three extra days for it to come out?

My Girlfriend's Back - Buy from Amazon
A small film that appears to be falling through the cracks. Will those that check it out be glad they did? Read our review for my opinion.

My Girlfriend's Boyfriend - Buy from Amazon
This film and My Girlfriend's Back being released on the same day? What are the odds?

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins Greatest Games 2 - Buy from Amazon
It's going to be a long time before my favorite team gets a greatest games release, never mind volume 2. They should probably win the Stanley Cup first.

ReBoot: Seasons One & Two - Buy from Amazon
ReBoot was a groundbreaking TV series and the first to be digitally animated. I'm really looking forward to seeing the show again after nearly 20 years, but unfortunately, the screener is late.

Note: These DVDs made their home market debut on the 18th of January.

Roger Corman's Cult Classics - Buy from Amazon: Up From The Depths / Demon Of Paradise amd Attack of the Crab Monsters / War of the Satellites / Not of This Earth
Roger Corman has made roughly 4 billion movies over his career, some of which are good, some of which are good for B-movies, some of which should be avoided even by fans of B-movies. So where to these five films fit into that spectrum? Check out the reviews here and here to find out.

Scooby Doo: Curse of the Lake Monster - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest direct-to-DVD release in the franchise, which has spawned live action and animated films. Its selling extremely well for such a release, even taking into account the weak competition. There are not many reviews online, but they are mostly positive, if not overwhelmingly so.
