Per Theater Chart: Beginners Begins Big but can't Top Tree

June 7, 2011

The Tree of Life held onto top spot on the per theater chart with an average of $30,915 in 20 theaters. It will undoubtedly expand further. Beginners was right behind with an average of $28,268 in five theaters. Midnight in Paris continues to shine with an average of $18,843 in 147 theaters. It has a planned semi-wide expansion this weekend, so this is very likely the last time it will top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but it will continue to hit milestones. X-Men: First Class earned first place on the overall box office chart and fourth place on the per theater chart with $15,134. Submarine managed to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but it was close with and average of $10,458 in four theaters.

The only other new limited releases to come close to $10,000 on the per theater chart was The Last Mountain, which earned an average of $8,785 in two theaters. Rejoice and Shout opened with $6,589 in its lone theater. Mixed reviews hurt Film Socialisme, as it only managed $4,526 in one theater over the weekend. Beautiful Boy opened in four theaters with an average of $4,041. !Women, Art, Revolution earned an average of $2,896 over the weekend and $5,617 from Wednesday through Sunday. Empire of Silver barely topped the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,356 in 17 theaters, while Small Town Murder Songs was not as lucky with $1,825 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Incendies reached $1 million just before the weekend, and that doesn't include its previous run in Canada.
  • The Tree of Life made it to $1 million in just nine days, and by this time next week it should be at $2 million.
  • Cave of Forgotten Dreams is holding on better than expected, which helped it get to $3 million over the weekend. Unless something really strange happens, it will reach $4 million before long.
  • Midnight in Paris surpassed $5 million over the weekend and after its semi-wide expansion this weekend, it should be able to reach $10 million.
