Fanboy and Chum Chum: Brain Freeze - Buy from Amazon

This is only the second DVD release for Fanboy and Chum Chum, a show that I described in my previous review as "aggressively annoying". However, the show also has an impressive pedigree with people who have worked on a number of top notch animated shows, ones that appeal to adults as much as kids. So was this a case of a slow start, or is there a deeper problem at work here?

The Show

The shorts on this DVD start with...

  1. Brain Freeze
A double-length short, which means it takes up the full 22-minute running time instead of sharing it with a second short. Forsty Mart is introducing a new flavor for their Frosty Freezy Freeze, Radioactive Red. At first Fanboy and Chum Chum are super excited; however, in order to make room, they are retiring Berry Pink, which is Fanboy's and Chum Chum's favorite flavor and they have already taken every last drop of Berry Pick away. After a better than expected chase sequence, Fanboy and Chum Chum manage to get their hands on the tanker and drink every last drop. The next day they wake up and have no idea what happened after they started drinking and must retrace their steps, figure out what happened, and find out where their underwear is.
  2. Berry Sick
It's the worst heatwave and there's only one thing Fanboy and Chum Chum can think of to beat the heat, Berry Pink Frosty Freezy Freeze. But when they get there, they find the Frosty Freezy Freeze machine isn't working because Berry the Ice Monster is sick. It's up to Fanboy and Chum Chum to get him back to perfect shape.
  3. Refill Madness
Fanboy and Chum Chum have a rare Frosty Freezy Freeze cup that entitles them to unlimited refills and Lenny and Boog decide they have to steal it. Lenny wants to prevent Fanboy and Chum Chum from staying at the Frosty Mart full time, while Boog just wants to sell it online for lots of money.
  4. The Frosty Bus
It's the Frosty Bus (think ice cream truck). Fanboy and Chum Chum decide to work up a good thirst first. By the time they are ready to drink, it's Boog's shift, and he's determined to prevent them from getting a Frosty Freezy Freeze.
  5. Jingle Fever
There's a new contest to write the lyrics to the Frosty Freezy Freeze jingle and the winner gets one million Frosty Bucks. The thought of having to deal with Fanboy and Chum Chum spending all that money is too much for Lenny to take, so he goes to extremes to stop them from entering the contest.
  6. Back from the Future
When Lenny learns that the Dollar-nator is a time machine, he tries to use it to travel into the past to prevent Fanboy and Chum Chum from discovering the enticing taste of Frosty Freezy Freeze. It turns out it's a harder task than it sounds.
  7. Norse-ing Around
Fanboy and Chum Chum created a six-foot tall frozen fruit pop, and someone manged to freeze a viking in the middle. After he thaws out, he thinks he is in Valhalla. When he learns otherwise, Fanboy and Chum Chum offer to help him out, and there's only one place to go if you need glory in battle. School.

The Extras

The only extra on the DVD is the animatic for part of Brain Freeze.

The Verdict

Apparently Fanboy and Chum Chum is quite popular with younger boys, but while some cartoons are able to transcend age, this is not one of them. While I am not a fan, I don't think Brain Freeze is any worse than the previous DVD release, so if you were happy with your previous purchase, then this DVD is also worth picking up.
