Strawberry Shortcake: Growing Up Dreams is the latest DVD release from the franchise, which has been around for more than 30 years. Will fans of the franchise enjoy the show? And is it worth picking up?

The Movie

Strawberry Shortcake is trying to read, but her two pets, Pupcake and Custard are fighting over the rug they both want to sleep on. Strawberry Shortcake says the problem is that they are growing up and getting bigger and now the rug is too small for them to share. Custard would rather stay a kid, just like Strawberry. This is when Strawberry has to explain to Custard that she's getting older as well. (This is actually true within the cartoon, as the characters for the show were redesigned for year four to make them look older.) She explains she will grow up, become an adult, and get a job.

She then tells them a story about that time Strawberry, Ginger Snap, Angel Cake, Orange Blossom, and Peppermint Fizz were star gazing and talking about what they want to be when they grow up. An astronaut, an artist, a zoologist, a rich whatever. Strawberry's not sure what she wants to be. When they see a shooting star, Angel Cake says whatever they dream will come true. While everyone decides to get some sleep and dream, Ginger Snaps decides to stay up all night and begin work on the designs for her spaceship. After an initial setback, she seems to have worked out the problems and starts building a full-sized rocket to fly into space. That turns out to be a lot more dangerous that she first thought.

In the second story, Strawberry Shortcake tells of the time she went with her friends to the Strawberryland Career Fair. This time Ginger Snap wants to be a firefighter, Orange Blossom wants to be a doctor, Angel Cake wants to be a restauranteur, Strawberry Shortcake wants to be a teacher, and Peppermint Fizz wants to be the mayor. They get set practicing their new jobs. Things start out okay, but the power starts to get to Peppermint Fizz and soon she's bossing people around. Then when Strawberryland is invaded by peppermint eating beetles, she will need the help of all of her friends to defeat them.

The movie is just two episodes from the show with a wrap-around story. The two episodes do compliment each other and fans of the franchise should enjoy watching the show and singing the songs, but it is short compared to most similar DVD releases.

The Extras

There is a music video from the cartoon and printable coloring pages.

The Verdict

Fans of the franchise should enjoy Strawberry Shortcake: Growing Up Dreams, but at $12 for just two episodes, it's only worth a rental for most.
