Per Theater Chart: Pina Dances to the Top

January 25, 2012

There were only three films this past weekend to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater average, and none of them were new releases. Pina finally expanded playing in ten theaters, while it climbed to the top of the per theater average with $13,667. It should hit its first major milestone soon. A Separation doubled its theater count and saw its per theater average grow to $12,986. It too should reach its first milestone sooner rather than later. The final member of the $10,000 club was We Need to Talk About Kevin with an average of $10,530 in seven theaters. The best new release of the week was Crazy Horse with $7,963 in its lone theater. However, it was a Wednesday release and if you include its first two days of release, it earned $12,336. If it were a Friday release, it likely would have reached the $10,000 market.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Coriolanus, with an average of $6,793 in nine theatres. This is not enough to expect the film to expand significantly, but it might stick around long enough to build word of mouth for its home market run. The Pruitt Igoe Myth probably won't be as lucky with $4,721 in its lone theater. Carol Channing: Larger Than Life earned an average of $2,500 in two theaters. Lastly, The Flowers of War missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,619. It was playing in 30 theaters, which is a mitigating factor. That said, it was also an expensive movie to make, so it really needed to be a box office hit right out of the gate.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • A Dangerous Method topped $3 million early in the weekend, while $4 million is not out of the question.
  • The Iron Lady got to $10 million over the weekend, but I don't think it will expand significantly further from now on.
  • The Artist also made it to $10 million; however, with its Oscar performance, it should expand more and hit at least a couple more major milestones.
  • The Descendants managed to get all the way to $50 million after the weekend, something The Dilemma never managed to do. It too earned several Oscar nominations, so further growth is possible.
