2012 Awards Season: DGA Artistic Appreciation

January 29, 2012

The Directors Guild of America handed out their awards this weekend, which includes a number of TV categories, as well as two for feature films. The DGAs tends to be very good indicators for the Oscars, so it is an important award. So who won?

The categories and nominations are...

OUSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN FEATURE FILM

OUSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DOCUMENTARY

Notes and Reactions...

  • Michel Hazanavicius won on just his first DGA nomination, which in my mind is a bit of an upset, as I thought Martin Scorsese should have won for Hugo. At the moment, he is now the favorite for Oscar, while The Artist is most likely going to be the big winner come Oscar night.
  • The documentary category is of no help when it comes to predicting the Oscars, as Project Nim wasn't even nominated. Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory was the only one of the DGA nominees to earn an Oscar nod as well, but I have no idea how to interpret that as far as the Oscars go. On the one hand, it did earn a nomination, which puts it ahead of the rest of the Oscar hopefuls. On the other hand, it lost to a film the Oscar voters didn't even think was worthy of a nomination.
