Limited Releases run Rampart

February 10, 2012

First of all, I'm equally proud and ashamed for making that pun in the title. Secondly, it's another Oscar week on the limited releases with three Oscars nominees on the list: Chico and Rita, In Darkness, and 2012 Oscar Shorts coming out. Additionally, while Rampart didn't earn any Oscar nods, it did pick up an Independent Spirit Award nomination, so there are some high quality movies to check out this week.

2012 Oscar Shorts - Buy from Amazon
The latest round of Oscar nominated shorts are hitting theaters this week. The franchise has grown over the years and it should get to $1 million in theaters. Fans of the format should definitely watch this collection. 2012 Oscar Shorts opens tonight in over 200 theaters, so check your local listings.

Chico and Rita - Reviews
This film recently earned an Oscar nomination for Best Feature-Length Animated Film and while I think it is a long shot, you can't deny it has earned great reviews. Hopefully it will find a big audience in limited release. Chico and Rita opens tonight at the Angelika Film Center in New York City.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu - No Reviews
One of the widest releases of the weekend. It's a Bollywood film starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. When Imran loses his job, he is worried about telling his family. When he goes out drinking and meets Kareena, they get so drunk that when they wake up, they are married. They decide to get an annulment, but it will take ten days for that to happen, and in those ten days they get to know each other. The film is opening in more than 100 theaters and could do well with its target audience, but crossover appeal is limited.

Exit Strategy - Reviews
When James is evicted, he moves in with his girlfriend, Kim. But shortly after moving in, he realizes he's made a terrible mistake. Now, not only does he want to move out, he wants to end the relationship and enlists the help of his friends to that end. It only has one review on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's negative. Not a good sign. Exit Strategy opens tonight in two theaters, one in Philidelphia and the other in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

In Darkness - Reviews
This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and while it is not the favorite to win, this should help boost its box office numbers. This Polish film takes place during World War II and focuses on a sewer worker who helps some Jews evade capture by the Nazis. At first he's only doing it for money, but soon it becomes more. In Darkness opens tonight in four theaters, split between New York City and the Los Angeles area.

Rampart - Reviews
Woody Harrelson stars in this real life Neo Noir about a corrupt cop whose past crimes catch up to him in a very sudden fashion. Woody Harrelson has earned a lot of praise for his performance and even picked up an Independent Spirit Award nomination, but it might be harder to sell to a wide audience. Rampart opens tonight in five theaters split between New York City and the Los Angeles area.

Return - Reviews
Linda Cardellini stars as a returning soldier who reconnects with her friends and family, but slowly has problems connecting with her husband and daughter (Emma Rayne Lyle). The film's reviews are good, but not great, and movies dealing with war and returning soldiers have struggled at the box office for a while now. Perhaps it will have better luck on the home market. Return opens tonight in four theaters including the City Cinemas Village East in New York City and the Laemmle Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica.
