A coming of age film set in Albania. Nik is the oldest son and lives a normal life. However, when his father and his uncle kill someone in a land dispute, he becomes the target of a blood feud. Now he can't leave the house and his sister has to quit school and take over their father's business. This is the only film on this week's list earning overwhelmingly positive reviews, but as a foreign language film, its chance of expanding significantly are remote. The Forgiveness of Blood opens tonight in three theaters, two in New York City and the other in Los Angeles.
The first of two Canadian films on this week's list. Seann William Scott stars as the black sheep in a family of geniuses. He works as a bouncer but idolizes a hockey goon, Liev Schreiber. When he gets into a fight with a different hockey goon and wins easily, he is hired by the local team. However, he doesn't know how to play hockey. He can't even skate. The film is earning good reviews, if you have the stomach for the violence, and fans of the sport should check it out. Goon opens tonight in theaters across Canada, while it opens in limited release in the United States at the end of March.
The first of two Bollywood films opening this weekend. Like most such films, it is opening in dozens of theaters but there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. These films have built-in niche markets, but they usually don't go head-to-head, so box office success will be harder to obtain. Jodi Breakers opens tonight in 45 theaters.
Ricky is a son of a prostitute, Pura, who abandoned him when he was 12. However, instead of making him hate his mother, this just makes him want to please her more. So with her release from prison imminent, he decides to make the best brothel ever, just for her. There are only two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and they are both negative with both critics complaining the film is not original enough. Neon Flesh opens tonight at the Cinema Village in New York City.
The second Canadian film on this week's list. Kalista Zackhariyas stars as Parvati, a woman who lost her entire family in a Tsunami. She then moves to Canada to live with distant relatives, but she understandably has trouble adapting to her new surroundings. Like many Canadian movies, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but I did find a couple positive reviews online. Snow opens tonight at the Cumberland 4 Cinema in Toronto. And if you get to the 7:00 p.m. showings on either Friday or Saturday, Kalista Zackhariyas will be there for a Q&A.
The second Bollywood film on this week's list. Like the first, this one has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It is opening in a few more theaters, 49 to be exact, but I have no idea how well it will do at the box office.
A group of teenagers head off to the woods for a camping trip, but when they return, they find out an army has invaded their town and taken over. Now with no training, they have to fight back and rescue their friends and family, who have been captured. This was the biggest Australian hit of 2010, earning $13 million and they are making two more installments back-to-back. However, its reviews here are good, but not great, and I have doubts it will make much of an impact at the box office. Tomorrow When the War Began opens tonight in ten theaters in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Memphis and other cities.
