International Box Office: Journey About to Come to an End

It was a slow week on the international chart with only three films that topped $10 million. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was the best, earning $15.7 million on 6,381 screens in 52 markets for a total of 185.6 million internationally and $270.8 million worldwide. It has now topped the original worldwide as well as internationally. The film opened in Germany with a mediocre total of $1.68 million on 424 screens. However, it is already a success, so the studio shouldn't complain about that result. The film has yet to open in Japan, but when it does, it should be above $300 million worldwide.
This Means War rose to second place with $14.43 million on 3,958 screens in 51 markets for a total of $43.53 million. It opened in second place in Germany with $1.86 million on 518 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.00 million. It also placed second in South Korea with $1.48 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total opening on $2.32 million. It only managed third place in the U.K., but with $2.88 million on 451 screens, it was its biggest market of the week.
Safe House remained in third place with $11.01 million on 3,480 screens in 48 markets for a total of $51.87 million. Its best opening came from Mexico where it placed third with $777,000 on 432 screens. It landed in fourth place in Italy with $1.28 million on 330. It only managed sixth place in South Korea with $473,000 on 291 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $773,000.
Hugo rose to fourth place with $9.70 million on 2,818 screens in 35 markets for a total of $83.82 million internationally. The film placed third in Japan behind a couple of local hits with $2.16 million on 455 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.46 million.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance fell from first to fifth with $8.93 million on 4,073 screens in 34 markets for a total of $59.76 million. The film has yet to open in Australia, Italy, and some other smaller markets, but it is underperforming on the international stage.
After winning five Oscars, The Artist returned to the chart in seventh place with $7.95 million on 2,727 screens in 41 markets for a total of $63.70 million. By the end of Sunday, it was just shy of $100 million worldwide. It has nearly done its run, but it does have Japan to look forward to.
