Weekend Estimates: 21 Jumps to Top of Chart

The industry will enjoy another solid weekend at the box office thanks to a healthy debut by 21 Jump Street, which will ride very positive reviews to about $35 million, according to Sony's Sunday estimate. Unfortunately, that probably won't be quite enough to give 2012 another win over 2011 -- somewhat surprisingly, because Limitless topped the chart last year with only $18.9 million, but the five movies that topped $10 million compared to three this year gives last year the edge.
The rest of the top 10 looks quite weak. The Lorax will be off about 40% in its third weekend, which is a fairly steep drop for a family film with no competition. John Carter will tumble 55% in its second weekend, which would have been OK if it had opened with $100 million, but looks terrible on the back of a $30 million opening. The only bright spot in the top 10 is the projected $2.2 million opening for Casa de mi Padre, from 382 theaters (which is always a tough number of theaters to open in).
Other limited releases doing well this weekend include The Kid with a Bike, which will earn about $48,900 from three theaters for IFC Films, Footnote, with $72,000 or so from 6 venues for Sony Classics, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen with $455,000 in 65 for CBS Films
