2016 is the Future of the Per Theater Chart

July 17, 2012

One of two Obama related films topped the per theater chart this past weekend. 2016 earned $31,610 in its lone theater, which suggests potential to earn some measure of mainstream success; however, documentaries rarely get too far. The Imposter earned $22,379, also in one theater. This also suggests some potential, but again, it is a documentary. Easy Money earned an average of $12,342 in two theaters, while Ice Age: Continental Drift was right behind with an average of $12,015.

There were many other new limited releases, some of which did very well, like Trishna with an average of $9,713 in three theaters. Red Lights was okay with an average of $5,170 in two theaters. Union Square earned an average of $3,750 in four theaters. The Obama Effect was not as strong with an average of $2,920 in 25 theaters. That's not a very good average and it is playing in a lot of theaters, so it will likely fade quickly. Ballplayer Pelotero had a lot of pre-release buzz and its reviews were nearly perfect. However, its box office numbers were really bad with an average of $2,063 in ten theaters. Alps was even worse at an average of $1,314 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Bol Bachchan reached $1 million during its second weekend of release, but getting to $2 million would be really, really tough.
  • Your Sister's Sister also crossed $1 million since this time last week. Its chances at $2 million are also slim, since its per theater chart has fallen to really low levels.
  • On the other hand, Beasts of the Southern Wild still has a lot of potential to expand. It hit $1 million very early in the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $2 million. Additionally, with a per theater average of $9,760, it clearly has room to expand significantly.
  • Moonrise Kingdom surpassed $30 million over the midweek and should continue to reach milestones for a while. It has now more than Joyful Noise, which opened in 2,700 theaters.
