Blu-ray Sales: Holdovers Overshadow New Releases

Like on the DVD sales chart, there were no new releases to reach the top ten on the Blu-ray sales chart. In fact, the best selling Blu-ray was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which leapt up from fourth to earned first place with 156,000 units / $2.55 million for the week giving it totals of 2.22 million units / $51.32 million after four.
Wrath of the Titans was pushed into second place with 154,000 units / $3.55 million over the week for a total of 829,000 units / $19.03 million after two. 21 Jump Street was also relatively close behind with 131,000 units / $2.62 million over the week giving it a two-week total of 650,000 units / $12.46 million. Mirror Mirror slipped to fourth with 65,000 units / $1.63 million for the week. After two weeks of release, the film has sold 372,000 units and generated $7.90 million in revenue.
With The Dark Knight Rises just around the corner, The Dark Knight was able to jump into fifth place with 59,000 units / $768,000 for the week, while Batman Begins was right behind with 56,000 units / $564,000. Batman Begins has so far sold 1.36 million units and generated $18.5 million in revenue, while The Dark Knight has sold 6.9 million units and generated $109 million in revenue. Add in the DVD numbers and these two films have generated $251 million and $367 million in home market sales. That's stunning numbers, although not quite record breaking.
The best new release of the week was Treasure Planet, which opened in 14th place with 23,000 units / $460,000. Mac and Devin Go To High School placed 25th with just 10,000 units / $124,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 18%, which is bad, no matter how you look at it. Even for its genre, even for a direct-to-DVD release, it is weak.
The overall Blu-ray market was awful compared to last week, but the new releases were awful, so that should surprise no one. The total units sold were down 54% while total revenue was down 53%. On the other hand, compared to last year, Blu-ray sales soared increasing by 142% in terms of units and 87% in terms of revenue. DVD sales were roughly the same compared to last week. Growth was a little better, but not by enough to really change the overall ration. Growth from last year was also strong, up 46% in terms of units and 52% in terms of revenue. The overall Blu-ray share was solid at 41% in terms of units and 46% in terms of revenue. This is exactly what you would expect at this time of year.
Next week should be a little better with American Reunion leading the way, but don't expect it to sell a lot of units. Last year wasn't bad with Rango leading the new releases on top of the DVD sales chart and the Blu-ray sales chart. We could see year-over-year declines.
