International Box Office: Rising to Another Milestone

The Dark Knight Rises remained in first place with $35.1 million on 12,000 screens in 58 markets over the weekend. After nearly a month in release, it has $446.6 million internationally and $836.2 million worldwide. It became just the 33rd film to reach $800 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but has yet to open in Italy, while it should have enough left to get to $900 million with relative ease, getting to $1 billion will be a whole lot harder.
Ted rose to second place with $19.97 million on 2,850 screens in 25 markets for a total of $117.10 million internationally and $326.94 million worldwide. Its only major market opening was in Spain where it placed second with $2.35 million on 349 screens. On the other hand, it remained in first place in the U.K. with $4.98 million on 513 screens over the weekend for a total of $27.02 million after two.
The Silent War was less than $2,000 behind Ted with $19.97 million in three markets. There were no other details released, but this is common for Hong Kong films.
Total Recall rose to fourth place with $18.93 million on 4,799 screens in 38 markets for an early total of $28.25 million. The film opened in first place in Russia with $6.24 million on 1,100 screens and in second place in Mexico with $2.12 million on 1,149. In Japan it earned third place with $2.71 million on 411 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.55 million.
Brave dipped 7% landing in fifth place with $17.8 million on 5,403 screens in 40 markets for totals of $148.3 million internationally and $375.55 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Spain with $3.18 million on 773 screens. It has yet to open in all of the U.K. (it is still just playing in Scotland) as well as Italy, South Korea, and many smaller markets. It should get to $400 million this weekend and might get to $500 million in total. This is enough to ensure profitability, but is below expectations.
Ice Age: Continental Drift fell from second to sixth with $16.21 million on 1,641 screens in 62 markets for totals of $624.32 million internationally and $768.01 million worldwide. It is coasting on holdovers at the moment and will likely drop out of the top ten before its debut in Italy in September.
Step Up Revolution remained in seventh place with $9.9 million on 2,500 screens in 27 markets for a total of $32.6 million. It only managed third place in France with $2.12 million on 311 screens and in the U.K. with just $1.07 million on 396. It remains well below Step Up 3D's pace, but it was an inexpensive movie to make, so it should break even sooner rather than later.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted added $9.08 million on 2,787 screens in 41 markets for totals of $335.48 million internationally and $547.17 million worldwide. It opens in Italy next weekend, while it still has debuts in Australia, the U.K., Germany, and other markets ahead.
The Bourne Legacy opened in ninth place with $8.36 million on 694 screens in 13 markets. It opened in no major markets, but did earn more than $1 million in the Philippines ($2.65 million on 329) and in Singapore ($1.35 million on 61). This weekend, it opens in the U.K., among many other markets, and should place much higher on the chart when it does.
The Thieves fell to tenth place with $7.50 million on 801 screens over the weekend for a total of $59.10 million after three. It remained in first place in South Korea and has already made close to $10 million more in that market than The Avengers did.
