The Tigger Movie - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon

DisneyToon was responsible for the studio's TV productions and the slew of Direct-to-DVD animated sequels. Occasionally, one of their films was deemed strong enough to be granted a theatrical release. The Tigger Movie was one such release. But was it really worthy of a theatrical release? Or was it only good when compared to the majority of Disney Direct-to-DVD sequels?

The Movie

The film begins with the narrator saying his usual opening when he is interrupted by Tigger. Tigger is tired of Winnie the Pooh being the star of the show and wants to be the star of the story. His story begins with him doing what he usually is doing, bouncing. However, he can't find anyone to bounce with. Roo (Nikita Hopkins) suggests Tigger find more Tiggers. He goes to Owl for advice, and after Owl says many, many words, Tigger picks up on, "Family Tree" and goes on a search for his family tree, which he of course thinks is an actual tree.

When that fails, he decides that instead of trying to go to his family, he should get his family to come to him. In order to do so, he writes a letter, but when he gets no response, he becomes even more depressed. This is when the rest of the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood decide to help by answering the letter and pretending to be Tiggers. Does this work? Will it fool Tigger? Or will it backfire?

I've previously reviewed this movie and there's little that needs to be added to my previous opinion of the film. It mimics The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh very closely, which is both a blessing and a curse. If you are a really big fan of the original film, you'll get a kick out of seeing the the pages turn, hearing the characters interact with the narrator, etc. However, this film also is weaker than the original, and by being so stylistically close, this becomes a lot more obvious. The story isn't quite as engaging, the characters are not quite as charming, the songs are not quite as catchy. That said, it is still a good movie and better than some of the studios theatrical releases. It is certainly close to the top of the list of their sequels. If you are a fan of the characters, then it is worth owning.

The Extras

The extras begin with A Tigger Tale, a six-minute featurette on the making of The Tigger Movie. Mini Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a collection of very short clips from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and The Tigger Movie. There's not much point to this extra, as far as I can tell. You can watch "Round My Family Tree" in sing-along mode, while there's a music video for "Your Heart Will Lead You Home". You can also watch the movie with Disney Intermission. This has activities you can play along with when the movie is paused. That's not a lot of quality extras; in fact, it is less than the previous DVD.

On the other hand, while the extras are disappointing, the technical presentation is not. The film has excellent details, amazing colors, etc. The watercolor backgrounds are particularly strong. There's no signs of print damage and no compression issues that get in the way. The audio track is nearly as good with clear dialogue, excellent separate, directional effects. The subwoofer even gets a chance to shine.

On the downside, the Blu-ray costs $23, which is a bit much for a catalog title that is light on extras.

The Verdict

The Tigger Movie is a very good movie, but not among the classics the studio has to offer. Its Blu-ray debut looks and sounds great, but it doesn't have a lot of extras. It's worth owning, but at $23, it is a little pricey. I would suggest waiting for a sale.
